  1. Learning 101 Keys for Success in School

  2. Learning takes repetition REPETITION • You must use new information 3 times for at least 3 minutes within 24 hrs. of learning it , or the brain will dump the information. • Use your notes! Reflect on them using (ISN) or rewrite them in your own words.

  3. Learning takes repetition REPETITION • Learning is not passive; say it and do it if you really want to learn it; make review cards and read them out loud. • Prioritize what you need to learn, figure out what you already know, and skip it until you are reviewing.

  4. REPETITION Learning takes repetition • Overlearn the material…… 6 times is the key! • Study in small spurts. 3, 20 minute sessions is more effective than 1, 60 minute session.. • Remove distractions especially cell phones, multitasksers, perform at 75% of what non-multitaskers do (MIT)

  5. More Tools • Use your Learning Style Results to guide your study skills • Use color cues • Pencil= what you know from memory • Blue pen= what you had to find in notes • Red Pen= what you don’t know or had to ask teacher or was not in notes • Study from RedBluePencil • Use Mnemonics to help remember related topics: the sillier the better. (Ex: ROY G. BIV) • Learn new information in associating with something that interests you. • Learn concepts in groups/steps of 7, no longer!

  6. Note Reflections • 1 page of notes=1 page of reflection • Reflections should be done the same day you took the notes in class and before other Biology homework • Spending time on your reflections will help you learn the information • Do not rush though the reflection or it will be a waste of time. • Reflections are ~40% of your HW packet grade

  7. Daily Quizzes • You will have a daily notes/hw quiz that will test you on the work from the class before • You may retake the quizzes before school within 24 hours of the original quiz. • The best score will replace the old score • Quizzes will be passed back only after the retake time has ended. • You will be expected to due quiz corrections in your interactive notebook for every quiz. • Make sure to do the retake… it will earn you points and save you time correcting quizzes.

  8. 6 Times! • Notes • Notes Reflections • Homework Worksheets • Quizzes • Activity or Lab • Test Reviews (Concepts) and What am I (Vocab) NOW YOU ARE READY FOR THE EXAM!!!

  9. What kind of learner are you? • Take the Learning Styles Survey http://www.educationplanner.org/students/self-assessments/learning-styles.shtml On the Left Side of your notebook • Write down your learning style including percentages • Write down at least (10) suggestions to help you learn better for your learning style.
