  1. Designing a Middle School Advanced Reading Curriculum Peers 2006 Randi Jones and Deb Paputsakis August 14, 2006

  2. What do we do first? • Randy and Deb were approached with the idea of teaching advanced 7th and 8th grade reading. We realized it would be a big change from the elementary gifted positions that we now teach. We were also exciting about this opportunity, but what do we do first?????

  3. Communication with Colleagues • We first spoke with the other 7th and 8th grade reading teachers, Cheri Estle and Pam Moore. They explained to us a little bit about what they had done in the classroom for the 2005-2006 school year. We were exposed to the new reading material purchased by the school, and we were both impressed with the quality and quantity of the material.

  4. Meeting with Mrs. Ross • Mrs. Ross spoke to us about the idea of using IVDL in the classroom with these students. She gave us a few resources to look at to find appropriate programming.

  5. Brainstorming • Next we began searching through both textbooks to find common themes that could be used with both groups. We searched for stories that went along with these themes. We also looked for Internet Resources and IVDL that corresponded to the themes.

  6. Themes • Chocolate • Baseball • Scary Stories • Holocaust • Vietnam • Titanic • Middle East

  7. Deb visited the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City this summer and brought back items relating to the Holocaust.

  8. Here Randi is shown looking the 7th grade text for stories related to our chosen themes.

  9. Deb is shown looking up Internet Resources to use with the stories from our text.

  10. Randi is looking up material to use for distant learning activities in the classroom.

  11. Syllabus • By the end of the summer, we had chosen our themes, stories, Internet Resources, IVDL, videos, and supplemental books and other materials for the 2006-2007 school year.
