Obesity and Inactivity • CDC states that children ages 6-11, who are overweight has increased nearly 300% during the past 25 years. • This may be the first generation of Children NOT to outlive their parents. • Healthcare costs due to overweight and obesity have increased to $100 billion annually. • More deaths are caused by lack of exercise and diet than by infectious disease, firearms, motor vehicles and illicit drug use combined.
Pennsylvania’s Epidemic • 61% of PA adults are overweight and obese • 27% of low-income children between 2 and 5 years of age in PA are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight
Absenteeism and Inactivity • “If kids aren’t healthy, their learning suffers,” NEA health info network • Sedentary kids have poorer cognitive skills, higher anxiety, and hyperactivity. • Unhealthy kids miss school more caused by inactivity and poor nutrition. • Overweight children are ostracized, and low self esteem and depression undermines a students learning, behavior and well-being. Physical Activity and the Brain • A physically active child will have an advantage in learning versus their inactive counterparts. (Dr. Germund Hesslow). • Mental focus and concentration levels in young children improve significantly after engaging in structured physical activity. • Vigorous aerobic exercise improves short-term memory, creativity and reaction time. • Aerobic activity not only increases blood flow to the brain, but also speeds recall and reasoning skills. • “Exercise puts the brain of the learners in the optimal position for them to learn.” John Ratey, MD

Grade 12 standards • 10.4.12A Evaluate and engage in an individualized physical activity plan that supports achievement of personal fitness and activity goals and promotes life-long participation. • 10.5.12D Incorporate and synthesize knowledge of exercise principles, training principles and health and skill-related fitness components to create a fitness program for personal use.
Focus on getting kids active outside of P.E. class • Teach students the value of Physical fitness and get them to appreciate the benefits. • Encourage them to be active and work on improving their level of fitness outside of class (activity homework). • Fitness must be FUN part of every lesson you teach. • ***Students who enjoy physical education and movement will find many ways to live a healthy active lifestyle.***
