  2. Discussion Guide 1. What should a believer do when he/she is in trouble? (James 5:13) A believer who is in trouble should pray.

  3. Discussion Guide 2. What kinds of things might James have meant by the phrase “in trouble?”

  4. Discussion Guide 3. What should a believer do when he/she is happy? (James 5:13) James says that a believer who is happy should sing songs of praise.

  5. Discussion Guide 4. What should believers do when one of them is sick? (James 5:14) The sick person should call for the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.

  6. Discussion Guide 5. Who are “the elders of the church?” Are they just people who hold that office or is James referring to the church staff?

  7. Discussion Guide 6. According to James, what is the result of “the prayer offered in faith?” According to James, the prayer offered in faith will heal the sick.

  8. Discussion Guide 7. How likely are we to do any of these things? What does that say about how much we really believe in the effectiveness of prayer?

  10. Discussion Guide 9. What does James suggest that we should do about our own sins? Why does he say that is important? (James 5:16) James says that believers should confess their sins to each other and pray for each other. He suggests that this will bring healing to those who participate.

  11. Discussion Guide 10. How likely are you to share your deepest, darkest sin with another believer? If we confess our sin to God, why does anyone else need to know about it? After confessing your sin to God have you ever said to God, “Please don’t let anyone else find out about my sin!”

  13. Discussion Guide 12. To whom does James point as an example of a righteous man who offers a powerful and effective prayer? (James 5:17-18) James tells the story of the Old Testament prophet, Elijah, who prayed that it would not rain. The result of the prayer was a three-and-one-half-year drought. Elijah prayed again and God sent rain.
