Child Training Method • Determined by the scriptural goal & objectives • God’s goal for everyone Hb 12:5-11 • Goal: independent godliness (spiritual maturity) • Objectives: (Positive vs. Negative) • Self-control vs. Self-indulgence • Wisdom vs. Foolishness • Responsibility vs. Irresponsibility • If the goal is to accept responsibility to choose to be godly, in submission to God’s wisdom, self-control • What is the method to achieve that goal?

Teach the Child Self-Control • You must train the will of the child • How do you persuade people? 2 Tim. 2:24-26 • Emphasis is not on the external • Physical coercion, bribery, etc. may work short-term on behavior • What effect on my child’s will do my actions and words have? Prov. 22:6 • Training includes instruction, practice, and confirmation • Strong-willed vs. self-willedHb 5:12-14

Training the Will or Training Behavior? • Parental Control should become Self Control • Sheltered from world? • “I said so” vs. “God said so” • Instruction should become Insight • From birth, the will is being affected • In what direction is it going? • Make decisions they can’t make until they can • Discipline should become Self Discipline • His behavior becomes his responsibility

Biblical Parenting • Control esp. younger children who can’t control themselves yet • Convince be convinced & teach the child • Constrain give opportunity to practice what he is taught; make sure he follows through • Confirm reinforce right decisions & develop more opportunities for growth; allow wrong decisions to teach the child
