  1. PP 993-998 EXCRETORY SYSTEM

  2. FUNCTION • Every cell in the body produces metabolic waste. • The skin, lungs, and kidneys make up this system.

  3. SKIN (Integumentary System) • Excretes water, salts, small amounts of nitrogenous wastes

  4. Lungs • Excrete water vapor and CO2

  5. URINARY SYSTEM • Formation and excretion of urine • Mostly water to keep wastes dissolved and easier to excrete (nitrogenous waste).

  6. URINARY SYSTEM • Formation and excretion of urine

  7. URINARY SYSTEM • Formation and excretion of urine • Mostly water to keep wastes dissolved and easier to excrete (nitrogenous waste).

  8. Step 1: FILTRATION • blood forced into kidneys to clean out urea (created in liver), toxins, mineral salts, and water to from urine.

  9. Step 2: REABSORPTION • Some substances return to blood to maintain balance (through vena cava/vein)

  10. Step 3: ELIMINATION • Urine passes through the ureters to be stored in bladder until it is secreted through the urethra

  11. URINE • Normally made of urea, water, salt and has a very light yellow color

  12. WHAT URINE TELLS US • Proteins may leak into the urine if the kidney is damaged

  13. WHAT URINE TELLS US • Proteins may leak into the urine if the kidney is damaged • Too dark in color indicates dehydration

  14. WHAT URINE TELLS US • Proteins may leak into the urine if the kidney is damaged • Too dark in color indicates dehydration • Brown color indicates bleeding from the kidneys

  15. WHAT URINE TELLS US • Proteins may leak into the urine if the kidney is damaged • Too dark in color indicates dehydration • Brown color indicates bleeding from the kidneys • Urine will have a high glucose count if the individual is diabetic

  16. WHAT URINE TELLS US • Proteins may leak into the urine if the kidney is damaged • Too dark in color indicates dehydration • Brown color indicates bleeding from the kidneys • Urine will have a high glucose count if the individual is diabetic • Low or no glucose indicates hypoglycemia, which results from too much insulin

  17. Assignments • Class Work: Dig/Exc Review WS • HW: SG # 11-20 and Urinalysis Pre Lab MUST BE DONE IN ORDER TO DO LAB!!
