  2. Since our opening over two years ago, we have been thrilled to offer a wide variety of classes in the performing arts. As we prepare for the fall, we have some exciting news to share. Any day now, we will be starting construction on three new studios on the first floor of our building. Welcome These new spaces come at the perfect time as we continue to expand our offerings in drama, dance, design and music for students of all ages. Our new studios will be the perfect extension of our state-of-the art facilities with sprung floors and increased ceiling height. They will also provide us with easy access to the new plaza being developed right outside our door. As you check out our offerings, you’ll note the increase in class options for male and female dancers as well as a new Youth Acting Company modeled after our successful Youth Ballet Company. Worcester’s theatre district is getting ready to welcome two new performance spaces to the area and we’re preparing our students accordingly. No matter what changes lie ahead, one thing is for sure, we will continue to dedicate ourselves to cultivating individual attention, igniting creativity and inspiring confidence through arts education. Public speaking is a vital skill in business and life. Effective communication can open up opportunities for advancement and leadership while building confidence and character. Students will explore key strategies and gain effective tools to engage and inspire others in a variety of settings. Through exercises and improvisations, students increase awareness, strengthen the ability to talk and listen and practice recognizing and experiencing moment-to-moment acting. Skills are then applied to dramatic scripts. Students learn how to read a play from the actor’s perspective while breaking down and exploring given circumstances, relationships and character needs. Structured, simple play guides each improviser to experience individual success, discover the joy of ensemble support and build the foundation for successful improvisation. Discover key concepts such as Lighting I (Teens & Adults) Students are introduced to the vast array of lighting instruments available today and the role each type of fixture plays in entertainment lighting. Atmospheric effects, fixture accessories and expendables (gels and patterns) will also be explored in how they can augment the use of the lighting element. Schedule: One 90 min. class/week Instructor: Charlotte McNutt Times: Mondays 7:45 PM – 9:15 PM Dates: Sept 9 - May 11 (32 weeks) Tuition: $960 Lighting II (Teens & Adults) Prerequisite: Lighting Design I Students explore the significance of light in design through the review of the four basic functions of visibility, motivation, composition and mood. Students will learn about the qualities and function of light through its properties: intensity, distribution, color and movement. After the basic goal of visibility is achieved, the lighting designer’s aim is to reinforce the overall dramatic impact of the production. Students begin the creative process of lighting design. Schedule: One 90 min. class/week Instructor: Brenda Shepard Times: Tuesdays 7:30 PM - 9 PM Dates: Sept 10 - Nov 12 (10 weeks) Tuition: $375 Playwriting (Teens & Adults) Work closely with an instructor on the conception and writing of ten-minute and one-act plays. Learn a variety of tools designed to offer a strong sense the specifics of writing for the stage. Assignments will cover dialogue, action, conflict, motivation, plot, structure and subtext, with special emphasis on feedback and revision to improve the work. Optional public readings will be offered. Tap is an exciting and challenging art form that developed out of African polyrhythms in America’s Jazz Age. Elements of classic and Broadway-style tap will be taught. The form’s musicality and rich percussive traditions are emphasized through fundamental skills and increasingly intricate progressions. Tap shoes required. West African Dance (Teens & Adults) Presented in partnership with Crocodile River Music, students will get the opportunity to move their bodies to the fun and high energy music of West Africa. They will learn principles of rhythm, fundamental movements and the ancient stories behind the traditional dances and rhythms of Mali. Every class will be accompanied by live drums! Schedule: One 60 min. class/week Instructor: Antoinette Mutuyimana Times: Thursdays 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM Dates: Sept 12 - Nov 21 (10 weeks) Tuition: $135/Drop In: $20 Dance Expressions This creative movement dance class was developed for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), limited mobility, autism and brain injury. Participants stay active, increase self-esteem and engage in community interaction in a fun and safe environment. Instructors utilize creative and accessible movements that can be adapted to each individual’s abilities and help them realize their movement potential. For individuals with limited mobility, the class is a unique way to increase activity, improve coordination, flexibility, balance and quality of movement. Caregivers are welcome to attend this class. Zumba® mixes low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval-style, calorie-burning dance fitness party. Movement, expression and speech are developed as storytelling tools. Students practice listening and responding in character and begin to identify specific details of a performance. New stories are explored each semester. Characters and scene work (scripted or improvised) will be explored while students work in pairs or ensemble. Stage presence and vocal acting skills like diction, projection and inflection are taught and theatre terminology is introduced. No singing is required.   8. Acting & Theatre Offerings ... Stage Combat (Grades 5-8) Want to learn how to safely fight, slap, punch or fall on stage without hurting yourself or others in the process? If so, this is the class for you. Students will be introduced to the design, practice and performance of fight choreography. The class will focus on unarmed or hand-to-hand stage combat. Students will explore the techniques used to create the illusion of danger and the means by which we use combat to tell stories on stage and screen. Emphasis will be placed on safety, partnering and physicality. Acting II also delves much further into the script, with scene work and further monologue work from great plays. Actors learn text analysis as well as how to break down and really prepare a scene. Actors are storytellers. It’s not just about having a fabulous voice, you must convey a story when performing a song in an audition. Develop the skills to act the song as a monologue or scene. Students will create an acting journey in a musical theatre song with analysis of the text, music and character intentions. Each student should bring sheet music of a vocally prepared piece. An accompanist/ vocal coach will be provided during specific classes in order to put these acting techniques to use.   9. Acting & Theatre Offerings College Audition Prep (Grades 11-12) Every actor should be equipped with a few audition- ready monologues in their back pocket! Learn how to pick the right monologues and showcase your widest range. Understand the distinctions among “classical,” “modern,” and “contemporary” selections. Gain the tools to break a monologue down via essential questions about given circumstances, relationships, motivation, stakes, arcs and tactics. Investigate the choices that make an audition professional and memorable. This class arms you with the techniques you need to create compelling, quality, successful work. The company is comprised of students between the ages of 12 and 19. Actors are selected for this company by invitation only. Students rehearse for three performances/presentations a year in three eight-week blocks (fall, winter and spring). Students must attend two or more rehearsals per week while in session. Performances may take place on stage, in studio, at a blackbox venue or other area venues. The Youth Acting Company was created to give young, capable actors performance opportunities throughout the year. In addition, The Youth Acting Company members are granted automatic acceptance into the Youth Summer Program at The Hanover Theatre. Students will be introduced to the many forms of stage craft (stage management, lighting, sound, costuming, etc.) and learn how they all connect to create one magnificent production. Policies Policies Students and parents (when applicable) must agree to The Hanover Theatre Conservatory (THTC) policies and procedures in order to enroll in a class. THTC reserves the right to assign substitute teachers for group or private lessons without advance notification to parents and students. Attendance and Tardiness Consistent attendance is crucial to the learning process. Please notify the security desk at 508.831.0800 ext 1900 to advise us of absences or tardiness. Tardiness is very disruptive to class, so please make every effort to be on time. No more than two unexcused absences will be permitted. Students should carefully review their schedules with parents before registering. Payments Payment may be made in full at the time of registration, or you may pay in monthly installments. Late or declined payments will incur an additional $20 service fee per month. If tuition is not settled by the end of the semester, students will not be permitted to perform in any end of semester performances. Withdrawals & Refunds THTC has a final sale policy for all ticket purchases, tuition payments and fees. No refunds are issued for missed classes, schedule changes, class transfers, student withdrawals or students under disciplinary action. Requests to transfer or withdraw from classes due to extenuating circumstances must be submitted in writing to the conservatory for review and consideration of revised enrollment or pro-rated tuition credits. Approved tuition credits are not guaranteed and may be used for future classes only. Tuition credits cannot be used for tickets or other merchandise. Tuition credits expire if not used by the end of the following semester. Dress code Theatre & Music: Please wear clothing that is comfortable to move in and free of graphics and text. Teens should be dressed in all black. No dresses or skirts, please. Remove any jewelry that may hinder movement. For some classes with a musical theatre or dance focus, dance shoes may be required. See website for details. Technical Theatre & Design: Traditional technical theatre dress code requires black attire. Jewelry and loose-fitting clothing that pose a danger or hazard while working with technical and design equipment are prohibited. Any tools (like wrenches) must be secured to your clothing. Dance: Proper dance attire and neatness are required for all dance classes. All dancers must have their hair secured back and away from their faces. Jewelry is not permitted. Appropriate and properly fitted footwear must be worn for each class. Additional dress codes vary by class and level. See website for details. Cancellations & Makeup Classes Every effort is made to operate classes on regularly scheduled days and times in order to avoid cancellations.
