  2. What is a Bento? • It is a boxed lunch • They are very popular in Japan • Many people take them to work, school, and on picnics

  3. What’s in them?? • Half of the bento includes rice • The other half includes several side dishes • Vegetables • Meat • Fish • Eggs • The most common item is a cooked egg • Many possible variations…just like your lunch!

  4. What’s in them? • Other popular items include • grilled fish, • fried meat, • fish cake, • and vegetables of various kinds. • cooked vegetables are used more often than fresh ones • For dessert, there might be an apple or tangerine.

  5. Who makes them? • Usually the mother of the household prepares the bento as she is cooking the dishes for the families regular meal

  6. Create your own bento!! • What items would we include? • Draw each item you would pack in your bento >Draw what you eat for lunch >Paste each lunch on construction paper

  7. Japanese people attach great importance to the appearance of their food. Part of the fun of making a box lunch is creating a visually appealing arrangement that will excitet the appetite.
