  1. GSGA Meeting, Oct ‘08 Issue: Decrease in on-campus student jobs Presented by: Aravind Ranganathan, Secretary, CS GSA

  2. Is there a real decrease? • Example: Desk staff positions at undergrad dorms: • Fall ’07+ : No more weekday desk staff duty • Reason: Increases to minimum wage in Jan ‘07 • No desk staff for Schneider & CRC currently • Src: http://www.uc.edu/resed/Desk_operations_info/Desk_FAQ.html (RED Website)

  3. Comparison of Hrs - Desk staff job

  4. Results • Decrease by 1776 Hrs per week (=2352 – 576) • Amounts to a loss of 88.8 jobs @ 20 hrs per week • These were the minimum pay “safe-bet” jobs in ‘05 • Mainly affects: • International students, especially MS in COE, COB, etc • No other means of earning (no real RA/TA possibility) • Budget cuts throughout UC, Re-structuring of Depts • Student jobs are the first to go • But the loss goes unnoticed? Ex: Grad housing closure
