CASNA meeting in Tokyo, 2004 • Participated in the First Asian Network Symposium on Nutrition organized by the National Institute of Health and Nutrition of Japan on 16 Jan 2004; Dr Emorn gave a presentation on CASNA • Invited to Open Symposium on “Optimising maternal and child nutrition for the prevention of chronic diseases on 16 Jan • Visit to the Japan NIHN premises • CASNA meeting in the United Nations University, Tokyo on 17 Jan

CASNA meeting in Mysore, India, 2004 • Visit to the Central Food Technological Research Institute on 26 Aug 2004 • CASNA meeting on 26 –27 Aug • Seminar on Role of Ethnic Foods in Nutrition co-organized by the University of Mysore and CFTRI on 28 Aug – CASNA members Dr Emorn, Dr Prakash, Prof Khor, Dr Hop gave presentations.

CASNA Collaborating Activities in 2004 • 10-day Training Workshop on Maternal and Child Nutrition Survey at INMU, Thailand, 3–13 March (sponsored by UNICEF and USCDC) • Training workshop on Vitamin A Assessment at INMU, Thailand, May (sponsored by IAEA) • CASNA 4th Meeting in Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore, India, 26-27 Aug; Seminar on “Role of Ethnic Foods in Nutrition”, 28 Aug (Co-sponsored by CFTRI and U of Mysore)

  5. CASNA Collaborating Activities in 2005 “Raising the Profile of Nutrition: An Asia Pacific Workshop” • Organizers: UNU/CASNA, WHO (WPRO, SEARO) • Supported by: INF • Host: Ministry of Health, Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia on 25-29 April in Kuala Lumpur

Objectives of Workshop At the end of the workshop participants will have: • Identified the needs and challenges for improving nutrition • Discussed ways to strengthen advocacy and institutional capacity in nutrition particularly by introducing the PROFILES process and software • Outlined the next steps for increasing commitment to nutrition intervention in countries

PROFILES • PROFILES is a tool developed by the Academy for Educational Development, USA • This is a process for nutrition policy analysis and advocacy designed to demonstrate the contribution that improved nutrition can make to human and economic development • PROFILES has been used in more than 20 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America with the support of USAID, UNICEF, ADB, World Bank, HKI and MI. (Ross, 2001)

  8. PROFILES in Asia • In 2001, the Chinese Academy for Preventive Medicine (Project leader He Wu) conducted a workshop using PROFILES to calculate the effects of malnutrition on economic productivity, health and survival. The workshop was funded by WHO WPRO and the facilitator was Jay Ross. • In 2004, Laos Department of Maternal and Child Health and other government agencies and UNICEF had Advocacy Training For Nutrition using PROFILES. The training was supported by WHO WPRO and the facilitator was Mickey Chopra

  9. Participants for the workshop • India 3 participants each • Bangladesh • Vietnam • Papua New Guinea • Mongolia • Fiji • Malaysia

  10. Criteria for selection of participants • The participants should be senior officers of national institutes of nutrition or public health, relevant ministries (e.g. health, agriculture, education, community development, economic planning), and senior faculty members from universities. • These target participants should be actively involved in data collection and management in nutrition

  11. Criteria for selection of participants • Potential candidates will be asked to submit a report (before the workshop) on: • What are their expectations from the workshop? • What is their plan of action related to nutrition/health advocacy in 2005? • Participants will be asked to submit an evaluation report at the end of the workshop.
