  4. Eucharist • During the consecration (the part of the Mass in which the priest prays over the bread and wine, repeating Jesus’ prayers from the Last Supper) the bread & wine become the body and blood of Christ

  5. Eucharist • the body and blood of Christ are referred to as the ‘Blessed Sacrament’

  6. Eucharist • Jesus is truly presentin the Eucharist. • Eucharistic adoration: is a type of prayer in which one meditates before the Blessed Sacrament [and thus before Jesus] either privately = individually; or communally = together

  7. Eucharist • This communal prayer is referred to as Benediction. • Benediction = special ritual prayer and blessing with the Blessed Sacrament

  8. During ‘adoration’ a monstranceis used

  9. A monstrance is an ornate ‘container’ for the consecrated host

  10. Examples of Monstrances

  11. A tabernacle:the place where the consecrated hosts are kept

  12. A tabernacle:the ‘fuller sense’ of the Ark of the Covenant!

  14. Expositionthe custom of taking the Eucharist from the tabernacle and placing it in the monstrance so that the Eucharist is visible for prayer
