  1. IST’99HELSINKI, November 22-24, 1999 NET LEARNING Session Organizations and Learning Technologies: How to Make them Meet – the Ultimate Alignment Imperative António Dias de Figueiredo Department of Informatics Engineering University of Coimbra, Portugal adf@dei.uc.pt

  2. People learn … … by being told Traditional schools and training paradigm CONTENT is “delivered” to them …

  3. People learn … … by accessing resources Self-study paradigm They have access to CONTENT

  4. People learn … … by collaborating collaborative paradigm They access CONTENT in a world of CONTEXT

  5. How do you use THE NET for people to learn … … by being told? You pipe CONTENT through THE NET

  6. How do you use THE NET for people to learn … … by accessing resources? You let them have access to CONTENT through THE NET

  7. How do you use THE NET for people to learn … … by collaborating? What?!

  8. There is no doubt that part of the future of learning is to be found onCONTENT … … but a significant part of it – maybe the most significant part – isto be found onCONTEXT

  9. We have been concentrating, so far, … … on the production of CONTENT and on the “delivery” of CONTENT… We already know a lot about it! We can even contemplate standardization. And that’s good!

  10. But … … what do we know about how to make learning happen in … … activity rich, interaction rich, and culturally rich social environments?

  11. The tools we use for intellectual mediation profundly influence the sense we make of the World (Vygotsky) The conceptualisation of knowledge is a social artifact that is maintained through communities of peers (Kuhn)

  12. The biggest challenge of NET LEARNING environments is … … that of building CONTEXT-RICH VIRTUAL COMMUNITIES …

  13. … where individual and collective learning takes place and where the learners take responsibility not just for their individual learning but also for the cooperative construction of spaces of belonging where collective knowledge develops.

  14. How can THE NET be used to strengthen and improve the creation of this CONTEXT? How can it be managed?

  15. action learning question posing directed dialogues debates learning by doing problem solving simulations CONTEXT! learning by reflection learning by teaching situated learning story telling socratic dialogues projects case studies panel discussions incidental learning learning from mistakes role playing small group discussions story listening project based learning

  16. THE ALIGNMENT IMPERATIVE! Educational Research action learning question posing directed dialogues debates CONSTRUCTIVISM ACTIVITY THEORY, ACTION LEARNING learning by doing problem solving simulations learning by reflection CONTEXT! learning by teaching situated learning story telling socratic dialogues projects ORGANISATIONAL LEARNING case studies panel discussions incidental learning KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMET Organisational Learning learning from mistakes role playing small group discussions story listening learning by designing

  17. communities of learning EDUCATION communities of practice WORK communities of interests CULTURE & LEISURE In the future we are inventing, they are… … a SINGLE TYPE OF COMMUNITY

  18. The exploration of this alignment is critical for the positioning of Europe in the emerging Knowledge Society. It should be put very high in our collective Agenda for Research, Development … …and Action!

  19. The PROMETEUS special interest group on Organisational and Cooperative Learning is putting its core on this vision … … and you are invited to join in! http://prometeus.org/sigs/organisational adf@dei.uc.pt
