  2. Life Facts • Dorothea Dix was born on April 4, 1802 •Born in the town of Hampton in Maine. • She was the first child of 3 • Her family life can be described as abusive and nonexistent

  3. More Facts • Her mother was not in good mental health, and her father was an abusive alcoholic. • When their family was in Worcester they had 2 more children. • Dorothea had to take care of her younger siblings. • Dorothea wanted to read, and teach.

  4. Life in Dorothea’s household • Dorothea’s household was “unstable.” • The members in her family didn’t get along well. • Fighting took place in her household a lot. • When the fighting got out of control, she would go to her grandmothers house.

  5. Dorothea’s School life. Dorothea was taught how to read and write, by her father. Which made Dorothea ahead of everyone else when she entered school. Dorothea then developed a passion for reading and teaching She then taught her siblings how to read

  6. When Dorothea got older When Dorothea became older, she was a teacher, nurse, humanitarian, and social reformer for the mentally ill. She enjoyed helping people! At the age of 54, Dorothea had traveled half of the United States and Europe inspecting institutions, jails, etc. for mistreatment. Dorothea Dix accomplished more in one 15 year span of her life than most individuals did in a lifetime.
