Point to Multi-Point Advantages • For pay as you go applications, a single concentrator can control large geographic area of meters. • Long range communications - • Lower number of concentrators • Lower number of backhaul connections • Many 1000s of meter controlled by one base station • Does not require saturation installation of meters • Consistent with Pay As You Go being used for a proportion of customer base • System can start working as soon as the first base station is installed • Proven technology • Used in UK metering trials (100,000 units) • Rolled out in car tracking (Lo-jack)

Point to Multi-Point • How it works - • Uses Ultra Narrow Band Telemetry (gives better S/N ratio) • Enables long range from low power, low cost endpoints • Endpoint uses Very Narrow band radios • Base Station uses wideband radio • Digital Signal Processing subdivides received signal into many narrow bands • Allows Base Station to receive many transmissions at the same time • “Find a Friend” feature enables one hop to cope with difficult sites

Modes of Operation • Four Modes of Operation - • 2-Way Smart meter with remote disconnect/reconnect • Meter fitted only • 2-Way Smart meter,remote disconnect/reconnect and budgeting information to customer • Meter and in-home display fitted • Pay-as-you-go • Meter and in-home display fitted • Demand Response • Meter and in-home display fitted • No disconnection (meter can be reconfigured remotely)

  13. Meter Specification • Fitted with Radio Module and PLC as standard • Features – • Internal Contactor • Load Profiling • Stores 15, 30 or 60 minute profiles • Optional collection • Outage Detection • Sends ‘Last Gasp’ on power loss • Optional • Approval to FM 12S (network)

In-home display Specification • In-home display fitted with ‘Traffic Light’ system to show tariff level • Tariff band can be switched between different preset tariffs according to normal, peak or critical pricing • Global Broadcast message for tariff groups • Three lights on in-home display facia (green, amber, red) show tariff level

Base Station • Base Station Consists of – • Radio DSP Board • Single Board PC • Power Supply • Modem • Weatherproof Housing • Antenna • Omni directional antenna, length 3-4 ft • Height assumed to be 30 feet above ground • Backhaul • Any broadband connection (GPRS, ADSL, landline, fibre, etc.)

  16. System specification • New development will build on existing features of AMS software • Either stand alone operation or integration with existing CIS • Will work within the competitive market in Ontario as part of Woodstock’s development with Systrends
