  4. INMARSAT SATELLITES The entire INMARSAT network operates through a constellation of 9 geo-stationary satellites. Geo-Stationary Satellite:Orbits in an equatorial plane at exactly the same angular velocity as that of earth’s rotational speed; appears to be fixed at a specific point in the sky when viewed from the earth. (Distance from surface of the Earth = 35,784 Kms) Advantage: INMARSAT users need not to switch satellites throughout the world.

INMARSAT – E / E+ • INMARSAT- E: Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) transmits Distress alerts when the unit floats free from a sinking vessel or when activated manually and are forwarded automatically to a maritime rescue co-ordination centre within the ship’s locality. • INMARSAT- E+: Has a key return channel to the EPIRB which sends a confirmation to the seafarer that their alert has been received. • Application: GMDSS

GLOBAL AREA NETWORK (GAN) • Enhanced version of Mini-M (M4) • Supports Mobile ISDN & Mobile Packet Data Service • Mobile ISDN: Circuit-Switched 64 Kbps channel for large file transfer & more demanding applications. • MPDS: Makes users share the channels in a satellite Spot-beam. In addition to secure voice the NSK200 can also connect to a computer for data transfer. INMARSAT World Communicator is compatible with the NSK200.

ENABLING TECHNOLOGIES • Data Acceleration Swift-64 can offer up to FOUR simultaneous 64 Kbps channels and can be “bonded” to produce 256 Kbps which can be boosted to more than 0.5 Mbps by data acceleration technologies. • Voice Multiplexing V100 multiplexer from Vocality International UK allows up to EIGHT simultaneous phone conversations on Swift- 64 Mobile ISDN (64 Kbps). It uses data compression & dynamic bandwidth allocation to slice single Swift-64 channel into multiple voice channels.
