  1. Industry Specific Training (IST) Program Orientation 16 March 2005

  2. Firstly – Why choose a building trade? • Opportunity exists to work on a diverse range of sites and projects. • Provides opportunities to use own initiative, be innovative and self- reliant (resourceful). • Relatively easy to fund self- employment (relative to many other trades).

  3. It is absolutely essential that we convey to young learners a true picture of what makes the industry “tick”. That is, its culture and trends.

  4. An orientation for IST What is IST? ■ A nominal four-day industry specific training program. ■ Eligible and successful learners will be awarded a Statement of Attainment including acknowledgment of any additional units that have been attained.

  5. Purpose of IST: • To provide opportunities for knowledge and skill acquisition in areas of identified short fall. and/or • To enable participants to sharpen their skills on a range of relevant techniques. and/or • To provide opportunities for development of new skills. • To provide opportunity for RTO assessment to enable formal recognition of competencies. • To provide advice on delivery pedagogy. • To provide participants with an insight into industry standards and contexts.

  6. Outcome: Statement of Attainment (including all units in the Industry Curriculum Framework document) but not including specialisation units or: • BCGCM2002B – Carry out excavation • BCGCM2003B – Install trench support • BCGCM2008B – Erect and dismantle restricted height scaffolding. • BCGCM3001B – Operate elevated work platforms (EWP). All competencies beyond Statement of Attainment will be acknowledged on testamur.

  7. Content may include:  Training predominantly in the areas of concreting, levelling and the “prepare for construction process” aligned to other units of competency contained in the Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) Course.  Assessment required in support of the standard exemptions for the award of an AQF outcome.  Discussion on the options for the delivery of the ICF competencies using a typical school infrastructure.  Opportunity for evidence provision for the award of non-standard units contained in the ICF course.

  8. Structure: At the time of orientation, participants would usually be: ♦ Issued with “student” notes for the identified text for units (or modules) ♦ Informed of the personal equipment requirements for the IST program.

  9. Between orientation and IST delivery, participants would be expected to: ■ Engage with the provided course materials to refresh understanding of IST course content. ■ Procure items of personal equipment required at IST. ■ Prepare for assessments tasks to be attempted as part of IST.

  10. At time of IST delivery, participants would be expected to: ● Discuss the outcomes of self assessment with TAFE instructor/assessor ● Be challenge tested against both skills and knowledge as required – (project work would seem to be the most appropriate means of collecting this information) ● Receive feed back as to their competence and skills level against industry standards ● Receive instruction to improve techniques and skills ● Be provided with delivery resources for use in their schools ● Have an opportunity to be involved in some form of evaluation of the IST program.

  11. Program Evaluation ► Before exiting the program, participants will be asked to complete a brief exit survey. ►This will be used to continually improve/enhance the ISTprogram.

  12. Attendance times for participation in a IST Program: ♦ This program provides an accelerated learning pathway that acknowledges the prior learning and experience that participants bring with them. ♦ In most instances, however, an attendance totalling 32 hours in duration (over four days) will be required to adequately address the learning and skill acquisition needs of participants.

  13. A typical attendance time table may look like this: ♦ 8:00 Start (learning activities) ♦ 10:00 Morning tea ♦ 10:15 Continue (learning activities) ♦ 12:00 Lunch ♦ 12:45 Continue (learning activities) ♦ 3:00 Afternoon tea ♦ 3:15 Continue (learning activities) ♦ 4:45 End. ____________________________________ Usual school time tables do not apply toISTprograms.

  14. Note! ■ Time table may be varied to take account of conditions on the day(s) and delivery of materials (e.g. if ready mix concrete is used). ■ Variations to time tables due to weather conditions and/or delivery of particular materials reflect actual/typical industry conditions.

  15. What is required from IST participants?  Punctuality • Practical tasks to be completed • That pre-reading, learning materials are used, as intended, to maximise learning and in preparation for end-of-course written assessment event (2 hours). • That participants demonstrate a willingness to proceed with practical tasks in an environment with intermittent supervision. • That participants diligently observe OH&S policies and relevant Codes of Practice.

  16. Assessment Assessment may involve a holistic approach over the duration of the program.  Assessment may include direct observation (including OH&S) and will assess against relevant units of competency from the BCG03 General Construction Training Package.

  17. Assessment(continued) • An end-of-course written assessment may be used as further evidence of competency, for the following units. • This may be by way of a holistic test to cover: • BCGCM1001B Follow OH&S Policies and Procedures • BCGCM1002B Work Effectively in the General Construction Industry 3. BCCCM1003B Plan and Organise Work • BCGCM1005B Carry Out Measurements and Calculations • BCGCM2001B Read and Interpret plans and Specifications • BCGCM2004B Handle Construction materials • BCGCM2005B Use Construction Tools and Equipment • BCGCM2006B Apply Basic levelling • BCGCM2009B Carry Out Basic Demolition • BCGCO2003B Carry Out Concreting to Simple Forms • BCGSF2004B Place and Fix Reinforcement Materials Participants will be required to demonstrate competence in all units!
