Swoon: Graffiti artist who uses Linocut as the beginning of her works- Will hand- print large scale linocuts, and then carve the delicate linocut design from the paper, and paste that paper cut-out onto walls. Now she works in installations, transforming three dimensional spaces with paper cutouts, sculpture and linocuts. *currently on view at Brooklyn Museum of Art!

  13. Wed April 23 Aim: How can you stylize your portrait to reflect a linocut style used in Shepard Fairey, or Swoon’s artwork? Do Now: Define positive and negative space and explain its importance in printmaking Homework: Sketchbook check Friday- continue “wreck this sketchbook” and other personal creative work.

  14. Thurs April 24 Aim: How can you transfer your portrait drawing to a linoleum block? Do Now: Define symmetrical balance and explain how it is used in printmaking Homework: Sketchbook check Friday- continue “wreck this sketchbook” and other personal creative work.

  15. What is printmaking? Print: An original artwork that is reproduced multiple times from a surface bearing an image. The image on the surface is transferred to paper using a medium such as printing ink.

  16. What types of printmaking are there? • Intaglio: Usually involves metal plate/acid. Ink is rubbed onto a plate and wiped away so ink only stays in grooves of plate. Under pressure of a press, the ink is forced out of the plate and onto the paper. • Lithography: Areas of stone or metal plates are treated so ink will be retained by certain areas. • Relief:Woodcut/linoleum: image is cut away from the block, the remaining surface is inked and pressed onto paper • Screen printing: Ink is forced through a screen and onto paper by a squeegee.

  17. What is a monotype? A combination of painting and printing; one of a kind- only one print is made. Most of the ink is removed during the pressing, thus the image cannot be repeated. Sometimes there is enough ink left for a ghost print.

  18. Texture and Line Printmaking is an excellent way to experiment with different textures for backgrounds and different line quality. Depending on the printing method you use, different textures and line qualities will be achieved. Always think about how you can manipulate materials to achieve different texture and line.

  19. Fri April 25 Aim: How can you begin to carve your linocut portrait? Do Now: Explain why carving is necessary to this form of printmaking, and recall other kinds of printmaking that carving is used in. Homework: Sketchbook check Friday- continue “wreck this sketchbook” and other personal creative work.
