University history • 1890 Founded as Woolwich Polytechnic, the second UK polytechnic • 1892 First CGLI Certificate awarded • 1894 Part-time day courses in association with the Ministry of War (Woolwich Arsenal) • 1907 Institute with Recognised Teachers in the University of London • 1935 First sandwich courses in the UK with the Ministry of War • 1969 Amalgamated with parts of Hammersmith College of Art and Building • 1970 Thames Polytechnic established. One of the first "new" polytechnics • 1976 Incorporated Dartford College • 1985 Incorporated Avery Hill College • 1987 Incorporated Garnett College • 1988 Incorporated some science courses from Goldsmiths College. Incorporated • some science courses from City of London Polytechnic • 1992 University of Greenwich • 1993 Incorporated Thames College of Health Care Studies • 1996 Incorporated Natural Resources Institute (NRI) and established campus at Medway • 1999 Established Maritime Greenwich Campus

The University Campuses Avery Hill • Avery Hill Park, Eltham, South East London • Wide range of 19th and 20th century buildings – some listed • Students can relax amongst the tropical plants grown in the Grade I listed Winter Gardens • Set in 86 acres of parkland • Almost 6,000 students based here

Charles Dickens featured the town many times in his writings.
