  1. ENGLISH IIFEBRUARY 20th As you come in, I’ll stamp: • “Do Not Weep Maiden, War is Kind” worksheet • “Slave Mother, Tale of the Ohio” annotations • “Sonnet 18” annotations

  2. NEWS FLASH! Note: I will be out tomorrow (don’t cry). As a result, we’ll be switching today’s activities to tomorrow. Here’s what that means and what you need to know: • Bring To Kill a Mockingbird starting Friday until forever. • Today, we’ll have our introduction to To Kill a Mockingbird. Don’t worry if you don’t have your book today. • Tomorrow, don’t forget to turn in your poetry packet on the stool before you leave. (The sub is supposed to tell you, but in case you forget, remind the sub that he/she is collecting the poetry packet.) • Tomorrow’s group work…

  3. WARM-UP Please turn to your To Kill a Mockingbird Study Guide and answer the following “PRE-READING” question: When living in a community (group of people), we are usually required to follow the “status quo” or the “normal“ way of thinking and behaving that society sees as right. However, sometimes we may disagree with the status quo... Is it our duty as members of a community to make our ideas fit into the status quo, OR do we have a responsibility to our own selves to follow what we believe is right (even if that means being labeled as an outcast/outsider)?

  4. REMINDERS • Homework (due Friday): Finish reading Chapter One of To Kill a Mockingbird. • Possible quiz on Friday. • Bring To Kill a Mockingbird and your To Kill a Mockingbird Novel Guide every day (starting tomorrow) to assure that you don’t lose participation points. • Poetry packets are due tomorrow! • Finish any annotations or worksheets that you did not get a stamp for • Edit your responses– check for complete sentences and check that you answered ALL parts of the questions.

  5. STANDARDS Literary Response and Analysis 3.9 Explain how voice, persona, and the choice of a narrator affect characterization and the tone, plot, and credibility of a text.

  6. STUDY GUIDE In To Kill a Mockingbird, we will read about a character– Atticus Finch– who disagrees with following the “status quo”, but instead wishes to follow his own ethics. What is the “status quo”? What are “ethics”? What other characters have we read about that are like Atticus Finch? This story takes place in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s. Based on what you’ve heard in history classes and what you’ve read in Black Boy, what can you say about the 1930’s in southern U.S.?

  7. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD Let’s start to reading To Kill a Mockingbird.
