  7. What is a call number? Book’s “address” Tells book’s location • Parts of a call number: • First line—Book prefix/Dewey Decimal # • Additional lines • Dewey Decimal # • Author’s last name

  10. Finding Fiction: • Prefix F • Second line—first 3 letters of author’s last name Ex.: Holes by Louis Sachar F Sac

  11. Finding Non-fiction: • Dewey Decimal number • Second line--author’s last name Ex. Cougars by Lynn Stone 599.752 Sto (599.752--Dewey Decimal number for cougars)

  12. Dewey Decimal System: • Non-fiction--arranged by topic or subject • Arranged by number from 001-999 Ex: Basketball 796.323 Dinosaurs 567.9

  15. Finding Reference books: • Prefix—REF • Second line--Dewey Decimal number • Third line--Author’s last name. Ex.: Encyclopedia of Mammals by David MacDonald REF 599 Mac

  16. Finding the Book on the Shelf Use the SIGNS throughout the library to find the correct number range for the call number of the book. Use the spine labels on the books to find the exact book that you need.

  17. Your Assignment When you come to this slide, raise your hand and an adult in the room will give you a slip of paper with a book title on it. After you have your book slip, proceed to the next slide.

  18. Write your name on the paper. Look up the book title in the Catalog. Write the complete call number of the book on the paper. Find book on shelf. Put the slip of paper on the shelf by the actual book. DO NOT REMOVE THE BOOK FROM THE SHELF. Notify a teacher to check your results. Your Assignment Numbers AND Letters Example: 364.1 Cap
