  2. Genetic Engineering: Genetic engineering is a process in which recombinant DNA (rDNA) technology is used to introduce desirable traits into organisms. New DNA may be inserted in the host genome by first isolating and copying the genetic material of interest using molecular cloning methods to generate a DNA sequence or by synthesizing the DNA, and then inserting this construct into the host organism. www.AssignmentPoint.com

  3. History of Genetic Engineering: • In 1972 Paul Berg created the first recombinant DNA molecules by combining DNA from the monkey virus SV40 with that of the lambda virus. • In 1973 Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen created the first transgenic organism by inserting antibiotic resistance genes into the plasmid of an E. coli bacterium. • In 1976,The first genetic engineering company was founded by Herbert Boyer and Robert Swanson and the company produced a human protein (somatostatin) in E.coli. www.AssignmentPoint.com

  4. Different Types of Genetic Engineering: There are 3 main types ogenetic engineering: • Analytical Genetic Engineering. • Applied Genetic Engineering . • Chemical Genetic Engineering. www.AssignmentPoint.com

  5. Techniques of Genetic Engineering: Some tachniques of Genetic Engineering – www.AssignmentPoint.com

  6. Application of Genetic Engineering : • Human Cloning: In humans, genetic engineering is used to treat genetic disorders and cancer. It also helps in supplying new body parts. This is pushing the scientists all over the world to research many different facets of human genetic engineering. • Medical Treatment: Genetic engineering in medicine has been widely used. For e.g. Production of insulin,Genetherapy,Human growth hormone. • Pharmaceuticals:Now genetic engineering to produce a large number of low-cost high-quality new drugs and diagnostic reagents, such as human insulin, urokinase, interleukin, erythropoietin.. • Industry: using microorganisms to produce all sorts of molecules and optimizing molecules by mutagenesis and computational models that can then be produced by genetically-modified microorganisms like bacteria. www.AssignmentPoint.com

  7. Application of Genetic Engineering : • Agriculture:The field of agriculture too greatly benefits from genetic engineering which has improved the genetic fitness of various plant species.. • Food:Food products have been developed with genetic engineering. cattle can be engineered to be bigger, with higher reproduction rates of better quality. e.g.developing animals whose meat has less fat.Itis possible to modify certain foods, such as fruits and livestock, interms of sweetness, color, and even nutritional value.e.g- Soybean tomato, corn. www.AssignmentPoint.com

  8. Application of Genetic Engineering : • Pregnancy Cases: An inspection of the fetuses pregnant women has been beneficial in encountering possible genetic anomalies, facilitated by genetic engineering. • Environmental applications: bioremediation by creating and optimizing bacteria capable of degrading xenobiotics • Genetic engineering is being used in biological factories that produce proteins and enzymes. • It is also used in the creation of black and white photographs & Bio-Art . www.AssignmentPoint.com

  9. Major areas of Genetic Engineering in Pharmaceutical Industry : • Recombinant DNA Technology: 1.Recombinant hepatitis B vaccine. 2.Recombinant blood clotting factor VIII. 3.Recombinant hepatitis B vaccine 4.Diagnosis of infection with HIV. 5.Herbicide-resistant crops. • Monoclonal Antibodies: It contain some vitro diagnostic products,Vivo Diagnostic products & therapeutic products.for example:radioactive chemicals. • Regulatory proteins: Human insulin,Interferon which is an antiviral agent combat virus attacks & destroy cancer cells. www.AssignmentPoint.com

  10. Commercial aspects of Genetic Engineering In Pharmaceutical Industry: • In the last 6 years, 65–70% of the 150 biotech drugs in today’s market were approved. • Pharmaceutical industry has created demand for biotechnology-based product development with low productivity, rising R&D costs and generic competition hindering more traditional pharma business. • In future, biotechnology could lead to increased emphasis on personalized medicines. • Moreover, advances in biotechnology are derived from developments in enabling technologies such as genomic, proteomics, cellomics, metabolomics, toxicogenomics and pharmacogenomics. www.AssignmentPoint.com

  11. Example of Some Pharmaceutical Product Which Made By Genetic Engineering : The biggest and most successful kind of genetic engineering is the production of gene products. These products are of medical, agricultural or commercial value. For example: • Insulin: Human hormone used to treat diabetes. • HGH: Human growth hormone, used to treat dwarfism. • BST: Bovine growth hormone, used to increase milk yield of cows. • Factor VIII: Human blood clotting factor, used to treat haemophiliacs. • Penicillin: Antibiotic, used to kill bacteria www.AssignmentPoint.com

  12. Example of Some Pharmaceutical Product Which Made By Genetic Engineering : • Vaccines: Hepatitis B antigen, for vaccination. • a-glucosidase: Enzyme used to treat Pompe’s disease. • DNase: Enzyme used to treat CF. • Rennin: Enzyme used in manufacture of cheese. • Cellulose: Enzyme used in paper production. • Genetic engineering also has made it possible to use plants as factories for pharmaceutical protein production. The plants or plant cells are essentially factories used to produce the desired proteins and are only grown for the purpose of pharmaceutical applications. • The plants that have successfully been transformed include tobacco, potato, tomato, corn, soybeans, alfalfa, rice, and wheat. www.AssignmentPoint.com

  13. Priorities for Future Genetic Engineering Research : Pharmaceutical industry has been and will continue to be instrumental in developing Genetic Engineering Research for pharmaceutical use. The new biological techniques have dramatically increased our understanding of many disease mechanisms. www.AssignmentPoint.com
