    1. The Cuban Revolution

    2. Fulgencio Batista In 1934 Fulgencio Batista took over the Cuban government and ruled as a Dictator for 25 years. The United States supported his government because he brought stability to Cuba.

    3. Batista and the Mafia Batista wanted to promote American tourism and investment in Cuba. This allowed Batista to become partners with the American Mafia and Cuba became the “Latin Las Vegas”

    4. Mafia Investments in Cuba Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano were prominent leaders in the American Mafia. They established Hotels and Casinos in Cuba. These made landholders rich in Cuba but did little to help the lower class of Cuba get out of poverty.

    5. Castro and the Moncada Barracks In 1953, Castro and a small group of Guerilla Soldiers attacked the Moncada Army Barracks. The attack fails and all are executed or thrown in prison. Castro was sentence to life in prison.

    6. Castro and Che After 2 years Batista released Castro from jail because of his public popularity but he exiled him. Castro then went to Mexico where he met Che Guevara and they organized another army to fight Batista

    7. Guerilla Warfare Castro used this fighting style to overthrow the Batista government because Batista’s army was unprepared to fight using these tactics in the Cuban jungles. Batista eventually surrendered and fled to Spain where he comfortably lived the rest of this life.

    8. Bay of Pigs The “Bay of Pigs” was an attempt by the Kennedy Administration to overthrow Fidel Castro’s government. The idea was not President Kennedy’s, it was actually planned by President Eisenhower.

    9. Bay of Pigs April 14-19, 1961 The CIA used Cuban refugees that fled Cuba when Castro came to power as their army in order to make it seem like the U.S. was not involved. It was not a well kept secret and the operation failed miserably. The failure of the Bay of Pigs led to Castro becoming stronger and more popular in Cuba and also the trade embargo that still exists today

    10. The Cold War The Cold War was a nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Although there was never any direct fighting between the two countries the closest they ever came to fighting was in Cuba.

    11. Castro and the USSR After the “Bay of Pigs,” Castro was paranoid of his safety and another U.S. attempt to over throw this government. Because of this and the fact that both countries were Communist, Cuba and the U.S.S.R became allies. The Soviets used this alliance to place missiles in Cuba that could reach nearly every part of the United States.

    12. Cuban Missile Crisis In October of 1962, Pres. Kennedy discovered the planned missile installations in Cuba. Because of this he issues a naval quarantine of Cuba that was designed to prevent the missiles from entering the country.

    13. Cuban Missile Crisis There was a tense 14 day period of negotiations that ended with the Soviet Union removing the missile sites in exchange for a promise to not invade Cuba.
