  2. Purpose: To study how to separate ink into its separate colors Materials: Beaker Pencil Isopropyl Alcohol Filter Paper Different Colored Ink Pens Hypothesis: When the solvent goes through the ink spot it will (spread, stay the same). Safety: Use caution with the glass ware.

  3. Procedure • Draw a line with the pencil 2.5 cm from the end of the filter strip. • Draw a dot with the ink pen on the line. • Fill the bottom of the beaker 1/8th of an inch deep with the alcohol. • Place the end of the filter paper into the alcohol. • Check the beaker every 5 minutes to see which colors separate out first.

  4. DataFill in the data table by recording the color that is at the top of the streak at that time. Time (in minutes)

  5. Diagram out two strips

  6. Questions • Which color separates out first? • Which color is the densest?
