  1. 8 steps towards a successful essay (Crane & Hannibal, 2009, p386)

  2. Define burnout. Compare two models of causes and prevention of burnout. Step one: Identify the command terms and what an answer that addresses these must do. Define: Compare: Step two: Identify content. • Definition of burnout: • 2 models of causes and prevention of burnout: Step three: Find relevant research studies. • Model 1: • Model 2:

  3. Define burnout. Compare two models of causes and prevention of burnout. Step four: What line of argument should you take? To help you establish this think about: • How are the two models similar? • What are their strengths and weaknesses? • Can you identify anything that is missing? • What research methods have studies which support the models employed? • What are the common limitations? Think about issues of reliability, validity or empirical testing shared by the models. Step five: Consider the argument. In this example it could be... • That the two models are similar and have similar shortcomings in terms of the approaches to research support. • That the two models offer complementary explanations yet neither provides an adequate explanation on its own. • ? • ?

  4. Define burnout. Compare two models of causes and prevention of burnout. Step six: Make an outline. Include your main points in the introduction and conclusion. Remember to describe the key elements of both models and to support your description with research where possible. Structure your answer so that you address the similarities in order, (rather than describing each and then giving a summary of the similarities at the end). Introduction: Paragraph 1: Paragraph 2: Paragraph 3: Paragraph 4: Paragraph 5: Conclusion:

  5. Define burnout. Compare two models of causes and prevention of burnout. Step seven: Write your answer according to your outline. (You won't be doing this for the example). Step eight: Read through your essay and use the following checklist: 1. Does the introduction provide a brief introduction to your line of argument? 2. Did you address the essay question and only that? 3. Did you include relevant knowledge - and only relevant knowledge (theories and empirical studies) - to support your argument? 4. Does your answer demonstrate critical thinking skills? (e.g. evaluation and analysis) 5. Is your answer clearly organized and focused on the essay question? 6. Is your argument well developed? Complete the checklist above for your outline. Once you are comfortable you can check off each of the above criteria, share your plan with another person for feedback. See your teacher to be given a partner once you are finished.
