  1. COD Storm Chasing What is it like?

  2. Travel (Gettin’ there) • The first day and the last day are the longest travel days • Chase day trips are usually a few hours but get comfy in the vans – we spend a lot of time in them! • Get used to terms like Werrrrr-Nerrr and Mafia and Tradio!

  3. Lodging (Where we sleepin’?) • We stay in rooms of 3 or 4 per room • We usually stay in places like Fairfield Inn, Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn Express, etc. • We rarely stay in the same place more than once so get used to living out of your luggage.

  4. Where do we go? • We have been near Mexico, into Canada, played in the Rockies (in two countries), and as far east as Indianapolis. • We like areas that are flat with a good road network. • Some places are terrible for chasing such as Missouri and Arkansas, Southern Indiana, and the Black Hills area.

  5. The CaprockLlano Estacado

  6. The Nebraska Sand Hills An example of a bad chase region

  7. Eating (Feedin’ time) • We call it Storm Chasing but honestly this is a fine excuse to travel city to city looking for good food. • Name a town, we know a place to eat. • We like steak, a lot. • However, this is a chase and sometimes fast food and/or the local Feed ‘n Leave gas station will be your meal. We try not to do that buuuuut…

  8. A Chase Day (gettin’ us a storm) • Get some data, load the vans, do some maps, and pick a target! • Head towards an intermediate target (and maybe get some lunch). • Continue to get data, confer with the lab, and narrow our target area. • Take pictures of the tornado (if all goes well!) • Find a hotel, get some dinner, drive to the hotel… • Repeat!

  9. Recreation and “down days” • Swimming, softball, and frisbee are a COD storm chasing tradition. • Van games, listening to music, watching movies, sleep, and really weird conversations are normal van activities. • Down days have allowed us to see national parks, play in the mountains, visit museums, and go to baseball games.

  10. Oooos and Ahhhhs • Ultimately, we are here to see storms and hopefully tornadoes. But we will chase and the results can be amazing.
