  3. Srinagarind Dam • Srinagarind Dam is the biggest multi-purpose hydroelectric project in the • western part of Thailand. The dam is earth-rockfilled type, 140 m. high, and • 610 m. long. The reservoir area is 419 sq.km and the water storage capacity

  4. is 17,745 cubic meters. The power plant accommodates 5 generating units • with a total capacity of 720 megawatts. The construction was completed in 1980. • Just few kilometers from the dam visitors can enjoy the Erawan Water Falls.

  5. The area from the damsite down to Kanchanaburi has been developed with • many beautiful resort hotels. • The distance from Kanchanaburi city to Srinagarind Dam is 64 kilometers

  6. (40 miles). From Kanchanaburi, highway No.3199 leads to Lat Ya and • Tha Thung Na Dam, and to Srinagarind Dam. the highway is smooth and • along the way there are at least 10 resorts which are on the bank of Kwai • Yai River.

  7. Information of dam • Name : Srinagarind Dam • Location : On Kwae Yai river at Ban Chao Nen subdistrict , Si Sawat district , Kanchanaburi province • Type : Rockfill Dam with Impervious Core • Size : 140 meters high and 610 meters long at the crest • Year Completed : 1980 • Storage Capacity : 17,745 million cubic meters (largest storage capacity in Thailand) • Electricity Generating Capacity : 720 MW • Annual Energy : 1,140 GWh

  9. Structure of dam • Srinagarind Dam is Rockfill dam • the structure of rockfill dam

  10. Structure of the dam

  11. Rockfill Materials • The rockfill dam is made from • The quality of the rock is a major factor in the choice of a rockfill dam and in the design of the structure. Extensive testing is necessary to judge whether the rock is suitable for construction.

  12. Rock Durability • Rock Durability - There is no entirely satisfactory test to determine durability of rock over centuries, and hence good judgement has to be used. Examining old structures such as walls and bridge piers built of the same material is helpful.

  13. Accelerated durability tests do exist, where the samples are subjected to alternate cycles of wetting and drying or freezing and thawing. Compressive strength tests can be made after each series of wet-dry and freeze-thaw testing if there are sufficient samples.

  14. Strength • Strength - In high dams where crushing of the corners of the rock pieces will result in settlement, the strength is important. In general strengths of over 35MPa or more are desirable for dams over 40m, while strengths as low as 14MPa are more suitable for dams less than 15m in height. Friability, the tendency to become a powder during crushing is important because too many fines can seriously interfere with construction.

  15. while strengths as low as 14MPa are more suitable for dams less than 15m in height. Friability, the tendency to become a powder during crushing is important because too many fines can seriously interfere with construction.

  16. Benefits • Irrigation Water supply from these dams has irrigated over 4118 acres of rice cultivation areas in the western provinces, and thus increasing agricultural yields in the region.

  17. Electricity These hydroelectric power plants have supplied and average annual electric energy output of 1250 kWh to meet thewestern consumers’s needs while helping secure the region’s power supply system.

  18. tourist attraction • Erawan National Park • The national park is 65 kilometers from Kanchanaburi along Route 3199. The park, covering 550-square-kilometers, is the site of the seven-tiered Erawan waterfall, one of Thailands loveliest waterfalls.

  19. The second tier has a pool, which is ideal for swimming and is particularly picturesque. However, the most popular activity in the park is trekking. Bungalow accommodations and camping facilities and a daytime food market are available.

  20. Shelters and camping are available for tourists in the park. Admission is Bt200 for adults and Bt100 for children. For more details, please contact the National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, Bangkok at Tel. 0 2562 0760 or ‘www.dnp.go.th’ or Erawan National park Tel. 0 3457 4722, 0 3457 4234

  21. Visitors may take a bus departing from the Kanchanaburi Bus Terminal to the waterfall every 50 minutes from 8 a.m. to 5.20 p.m. The journey takes 1.5 hours.
