  1. Changes in physiological state Learning Intentions: Define the terms ‘content limitations’, ‘controlled processes’ and automatic processes’. Outline the characteristics of altered states of consciousness including perceptual and cognitive distortions, emotional awareness, self control and time orientation. Outline and evaluate research into the effects of sleep deprivation vs. blood alcohol concentration To start - logbook activity

  2. Content Limitations • During NWC content is more restricted or limited, ie: selective. • Content is more organised and logical than ASC. For example, when we are awake and alert, we are generally able to follow logical steps to solve a problem. • In NWC we are able to exercise control over what is acceptable modes of thought and behaviour in our environment.

  3. Controlled and Automatic Processes in NWC • Controlled processes are when information processing involves conscious, alert awareness and mental effort focussed on achieving a particular goal. Eg: solving a maths problem. • Automatic processes require little conscious awareness and mental effort, minimal attention and do not interfere with the performance of other activities. Eg: driving while listening to the radio, Stroop effect.

  4. ACS Refresher • Altered states of consciousness (ASC) describes any state that is distinctly different from NWC. • In an ASC there are significant changes to the way people experience thoughts, feelings and sensations and they are more likely to experience the extremes of sensations and emotions. • An ASC is characterised by a change in brain wave patterns and may occur naturally such as sleeping or it may be intentionally induced such as meditation.

  5. Characteristics of ASC • Distortions of perception and cognition: • an ASC can have one of two effects on the senses – it can either make them more receptive to external stimuli or dulls them to such an extent that some sensations are not experienced at all. • People can lose a sense of identity. • Cognitive functioning can become impaired. Thought processes are often disorganised, illogical and lacking in sequence.

  6. Characteristics of ASC • Time orientation - Often distorted during ASC – some people may feel that time is passing very quickly, others may feel as though time is going very slowly. • Changes in emotional awareness - ASC often put an individual’s feeling into a state of turmoil, resulting in uncharacteristic responses • Changes in self control - Trouble coordinating movements, emotions, aggressiveness, less inhibited.
