  2. Managerial Judgment • Description:  • The brain is a truly amazing biological machine, moulded through millions of years of evolutionary pressure. More recent changes in human history have created a gap between the world for which our brains were designed, and the world in which we actually live. This mismatch is played out in many aspects of management and leadership. We suffer from strong biases that hinder good decision-making, we are more emotionally sensitive to threat than we need to be, and we often fail to develop realistic perceptions of others and of ourselves. Fortunately, scientists have generated a great deal of knowledge that allows us to identify these deficiencies and to find remedies for them. This course is based on state-of-the-art neurobiological research that sheds light on the obstacles we face when making decisions and managing our emotions. By discovering the roots of many of these difficulties we can also learn solutions to the problems created by our biological history.

  3. Managerial Judgment • What this course is not: • Therapy The goal is for you to gain an understanding of how the mind works, including the role of emotions in judgment. We will discuss remedies for common cognitive and emotional pitfalls and the skills needed to make successful decisions. But, this will not be at a personal level. • A preparatory course for brain surgery • You are business school students, not medical students. The neurobiology presented in the class will not be very difficult. I will teach you the basics of what you need to know about the brain to understand how it gets us into trouble and how we can avoid its pitfalls. • We will not be addressing risk analysis, nor will I be including decision-aiding software in the course. This course approaches managerial judgment from a psychological perspective, based on the latest scientific evidence (including brain imaging research).

  8. Course Requirements • Participation (10%) • Individual Paper (35%) • Syndicate Paper (25%) • Three in-class quizzes (30%; 10% each)

  9. 35% Individual Paper • Individual written paper (due August 20th) (35%) • 2,000 words • Hard copy to me or soft copy to assignments@mbs.edu • Apply course content to an issue at work. The issue can be at the individual, team and/or organizational level. Possible topics include: • An analysis of a key decision that needs to be made (or an analysis of a recent decision with key learnings) • An analysis of an issue related to the structure or culture of the organization • You can also choose a non-work topic or a decision you are making about work • These are some suggested topics. Feel free to discuss other possible topics with me.

Individual Paper • Potential Structure (this is just a suggestion – different papers might use different structures) • Situation Description/Relevant Background • The Problem or Issue • Alternative Approaches • Concerns/Potential Biases/Role of Emotion • Plan of Action/Outcome • Key Learnings

  11. 25% Syndicate Case Write-Up • During the 2nd weekend you will be given a case to analyze and write-up in your syndicate groups • 4-5 people, self-selected • 2,000 words • There is an hour for syndicate discussion on the case during the 2nd weekend • Due start of class 3rd weekend • Hard copy

  12. In-Class Quizzes10% each 30% • You will be given a short quiz near the end of each of the three weekends • Relevant Content • Class Materials • Class Discussions • Assigned Chapters and Readings • Closed book
