  2. Olive Clio Hazlett • 1890- 1974 • Associate Professor at U of I • invented theory of differential equations in positive characteristic • wrote a paper on "Integers as Matrices

  3. Hypatia of Alexandria • 370- 415 • wrote commentaries on conics and astronomical works • head of the Platonist school at Alexandria • brutally murdered by the Nitrian monks

  4. Maria Gaëtana Agnesi • 1718- 1799 • published a series of essays on philosophy and natural science • two volume work Instituzioni analitiche ad uso della gioventù italiana • discussed cubic curve now know as the 'witch of Agnesi'

  5. Caroline Lucretia Herschel • 1750- 1848 • pointed out 560 stars omitted from Flamsteed’s Observations of the Fixed Stars • A minor planet was named Lucretia • made many astronomical observations

  6. Marie-Sophie Germain • 1776- 1831 • corresponded and helped many famous mathematicians • demonstrated that Lagrange's equation did yield Chladni's patterns in several cases

  7. Emmy Amalie Noether • 1882- 1935 • elected to the Circolo Matematico di Palermo • Noether's Theorem proves a relationship between symmetries in physics and conservation principles

  8. Dame Mary Lucy Cartwright • 1900- 1998 • first woman to receive the Sylvester Medal • Cartwright's Theorem, gave an estimate for the maximum modulus of an analytic function which takes the same value no more than p times in the unit disc

  9. Virginia Appuhn • Teaches many upper level math courses at CCHS • sponsor of Math Team, Wyse, and the Terrier Times, Terriernet • created Cyberdale presentation presented in Chicago
