  14. Print Materials – Non-fiction • Contain Facts about real things, people, places, events • Arranged by Subject in Number Order: 000-999 • Dewey Decimal System • Sample of Non-fiction Call Number: 306.874 PAC Bringing Up Parents: The Teenager’s Handbook by Alex J. Packer

  15. Print Materials - Fiction • Made-Up Stories in Narrative Form • Written to Entertain, Inform, Therapy • Shelved in ABC Order by Author’s Last Name • Sample of Fiction Call Number: FIC AND (Speak by Laurie Anderson)

  17. Print – Reference Materials • Nonfiction books • Arranged by Numbers 000-999 • No Checkout – Use in Library -- WHY? Don’t need to Read All the Way through • Sample Call Number: Encyclopedia of American Law REF 348.73 WES

Book Etiquette • No Marking in Books • Use Bookmarks (Always on Circulation Desk) • Do Not Bend / Tear Pages • If dropped, pick up immediately! • Do Not Check out books for other students • If you find a library book, return it to library; • Help Keep Books in Order – If You do not know where a book goes, bring it to Circ Desk ***Report all Book loses / accidents immediately!!! *** You Must Pay for Lost Library Books

Print Materials - Magazines • Current issues are in on display in the Periodical Section • Current issues stay in the library – NO Checkouts • DO NOT CUT OUT ARTICLES – Use Copier • Variety of Magazines – News and Entertainment – 46 titles ordered + donations • Past Issues • Research-based magazines – stored for 1 year • Entertainment magazine – given away

Print Materials - Newspapers • Lexington Herald – Monday through Friday • Appalachian News Express • Print: Weekend Ed.; Wednesdays; Fridays • Online Version: (See Library Staff for Logon) • Newspapers Remain in the Library Media Center • Can copy articles when needed • Can request older editions for personal use, if needed

  21. Audio Visual Materials • DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs, Audio Books shelved in A/V Room • Offer both Fiction and Nonfiction • Sample Call Number: DVD 340.3 AUS

Computer Rules • Computers are for school related projects only • The Internet is for school research only – Follow the school AUP policy or lose your privileges • Never log in as someone else • Always log off when you finish using the computer • If you bring work from home and expect to print, you must use the same programs we have here. • Save word processing files in Rich Text Format (rtf) or Word 97-2003 version when you bring files from home – NO Works files!

Using the Internet • Your log-on username is 1st initial, last name, and a number (same one in grade school) • Your password is created by you---write it in a safe place in case you forget it; • Use for school-related information only! • No gaming, IM, or emailing unless for school use • Printing from the Internet: • Educational printing only! • Read before you print – Ask: Is this what I need??? • Use CPR – Copy, Paste, Reduce to word processing • 5 pages maximum printed • NEVER Print An Entire Website!!!

Evaluating Internet Sources • You can’t believe everything you read on the Internet! • Anyone, anywhere can post anything they want on the Internet! • You must evaluate the information and decide whether or not the information presented is accurate. • Domains such as .edu, .org, and .gov can help you determine whether or not information found on a website is reliable.

Checking Materials in and Out • To check out library materials, please know your library number – Month, Day of your BD • Most books = 3 weeks (if needed longer, please renew) • Reference items = overnight • Current Magazines & Newspapers = No Checkout unless for a special reason • Return books to the Circulation Desk • No checkouts if you owe for lost / overdue library books

Just ask! • Copy Machine for school use only at no charge – Do Not Attempt to Repair – ASK for HELP! • Color printer available upon request • Digital still and video cameras are available for in-school use • Laptops for use in LMC when available—check out at Circulation desk

  27. Library Etiquette Be considerate of others! HOW? • Follow PCCHS Code of Conduct • Use the LMC for academic purposes • Leave food, drinks, or candy outside • Work quietly • Keep socializing to a minimum • Leave your space cleaner than you found it • Cell phones strictly prohibited • No GUM - $1 Fine if caught! • DO NOT Rearrange Furniture

Finishing Up. . . • Throw away your trash! • Push chairs in at the end of the period. • Leave in a quiet and orderly manner. • Check out all materials before leaving. **Respect Yourself, Others, and the Library Property. • Profanity • Disrespect • Rudeness • Vandalism ….will not be tolerated! Be Good or Be Gone!
