  1. “Coastal managers apply climate information and analysis when faced with decisions that have a climate component” A Strategic Plan for Coastal Climatology

  2. Coastal Climatology Goal and Objectives • Goal: Coastal managers apply climate information and analyses when faced with decisions that have a climate component • Objectives or Key Steps: • Generate demand for climate information and analyses by identifying needs • Make climate data and tools available • Develop knowledge and skills needed to apply climate information • Improve decision-making processes by adding operational climate components • Improve success by systematically examining performance

  3. Coastal Climatology End Users and Partners User Use Power Companies Improve short term forecasts of demand Emergency Mgrs Wave forecasts for erosion and rip currents Agricul. Interests Humidity and precip. Land Planners Setback limits Fishery Mgrs SST impacts on recruitment Fishers Fish distributions Health Mgrs Airborne irritants and toxins

  4. Coastal Climatology Multipliers, End Users, and Partners Multiplier User Use Leader/Partner Power Companies Improve short term forecasts of demand Emergency Mgrs Wave forecasts for erosion and rip currents Agricul. Interests Humidity and precip. Land Planners Setback limits Fishery Mgrs SST impacts on recruitment Fishers Fish distributions Health Mgrs Airborne irritants and toxins

  5. Coastal Climatology How to identify priority users and uses • NOAA Goals, Objectives and Performance Measures • Climate Observation and Analysis program (CGT) • Coastal and Marine Resources program (EGT) • Habitat program (EGT) • Coasts Estuaries and Oceans program (W&W) • Coastal Services Center Strategic Plan • IOOS logic model • Watersheds/EAM logic model • Hazards logic model • Learning Organization logic model • Non-NOAA Groups • e.g., American Meteorological Association • Pragmatic Concerns • Where can we make a difference • Users ready to receive such information • Scientifically and technically feasible • Prepare us for a larger role – skill building with same resources • Appropriate stakeholder alignments

  6. Coastal Climatology Current Activities • Goal: Coastal managers apply climate information and analyses when faced with decisions that have a climate component • Key Steps: • Generate demand for climate information and analyses by identifying needs • --Needs assessments (SERCC, UNCW/CORMP, UGA/FSU) • --Coordinate with needs assessments done by others (IOOS RA’s) • Make climate data and tools available • --www.coastalclimate.org and cormp.org/climate • --CWISE (AVHRR, landfall hurricane index, seabreeze isopleths, SLC) • --Coordinate with IOOS RA’s, DMAC, World Meteorological Assn. • --HAB climatologies?, Alaska erosion/inundation tool? • Develop knowledge and skills needed to apply climate information • --www.coastalclimate.org and cormp.org/climate, publications • --CWISE publications • Improve decision-making processes by adding operational climate components • --www.coastalclimate.org and cormp.org/climate • --CWISE landfall hurricane index, seabreeze forecasts • --Coordinate with IOOS RA’s • --Alaska erosion/inundation tool • Improve success by systematically examining performance

  7. Coastal Climatology Are These the Right Goal and Objectives? • Goal: Coastal managers apply climate information and analyses when faced with decisions that have a climate component • Objectives or Key Steps: • Generate demand for climate information and analyses by identifying needs • Make climate data and tools available • Develop knowledge and skills needed to apply climate information • Improve decision-making processes by adding operational climate components • Improve success by systematically examining performance

  8. Coastal Climatology Who Are the Key Multipliers, End Users, and Partners? Multiplier User Use Leader/Partner Power Companies Improve short term forecasts of demand Emergency Mgrs Wave forecasts for erosion and rip currents Agricul. Interests Humidity and precip. Land Planners Setback limits Fishery Mgrs SST impacts on recruitment Fishers Fish distributions Health Mgrs Airborne irritants and toxins

  9. Coastal Climatology What Programs Should Coastal Climatology Link With? • IOOS • Needs assessments and user identification • Market analyses • Data development • Data communication and distribution protocols • Applied research • Education and outreach • PRIDE, PRiMO, IDEA, NOAA in the Carolinas?

  10. Coastal Climatology CWISE Issues Programmatic Discussions --RFP for CWISE II March --Partnerships with PRIDE, PRiMO etc. ?? Research to Operations Discussions --SST bias Ongoing --Spatial mapping ?? --Landfall hurricane climate forecasts ?? --Water level, wind and wave climatologies ?? --Sea breeze climatologies April or May
