  3. Examples of Laws Cont’d • If anyone has sung or composed a song against another person that was causing slander or insult . . . He shall be clubbed to death. • There are eight kinds of punishments: fine, fetters, flogging, retaliation in kind, civil disgrace, banishment, slavery, & death

  4. Roman Family Life • Pater familias: Father in charge of family • Responsible for welfare of ENTIRE family • Pater=judge, jury, priest & autocrat who could punish, execute, or dispose of family member or material possession
