  2. Temperature • Degrees Celsius (°c) is the modern scale used to measure temperature. • Some people still like to use the Fahrenheit scale

  3. What is the name of an item that helps to keep things warm? • Can you suggest any materials of everyday items that help you to keep things cold? • Science Sack...

  4. Investigation • In groups each table will have an ice troll and a piece of material. • Remember...we need to save the trolls! • Make sure your prediction is written down. • Each troll is filled with 6 1/2 mini cups of water. • We are going to measure how many cups each troll will fill after 40 minutes? • Record the results every 20 minutes.

  5. Prediction • How can we make a good prediction? • What facts to we need to consider? • Why is it important? • In your groups, come up with a prediction for your troll and the material.

Thermal Insulators • Heat does not pass through some material such as plastic, oven glove, thermal underwear, cork board and wood.  These materials are called thermal insulators. • Thermal insulators are good for keeping heat out as well and in.  Some examples of good insulators are - a thermos  - keeps hot things hot and keeps cold things cold, cooler - deeps the heat out and keeps the inside cool, and a polystyrene cup keeps the heat in and keeps it hot. • Heat loves to travel and will travel from a warmer material to a colder material.  The heat will only travel from hot things to colder things and never the other way around.
