  1. Lesson 9 – Matthew 4:1–11, Luke 4:1–13 Temptation

  2. Will it Float or Sink? • What makes it float? How does floating work? (physics) • How about peeled? • How could this be likened to our ability to resist temptation today? • What is the peel? (Keep in mind as we read)

  3. The temptations of Christ • Matthew 4:1-11 (note the JST) • What did the Savior do to prepare for temptation? • v2 – “he had fasted forty days and forty nights” • v2 (JST) – “he communed with God” • What did the Savior do to overcome temptation, in response to it? • Quoted scripture • Left the situation

  4. The 3 Temptations Elder David O. McKay • What do each represent? • Stones into bread – Yielding to Physical Appetites • Jump off temple – Yielding to Pride • Worship Satan for all the Kingdom – Yielding to Power and Riches “Now, nearly every temptation that comes to you and me comes in one of those forms. Classify them, and you will find that under one of those three nearly every given temptation that makes you and me spotted, ever so little maybe, comes to us as (1) a temptation of the appetite; (2) a yielding to the pride and fashion and vanity of those alienated from the things of God; or (3) a gratifying of the passion, or a desire for the riches of the world, or power among men” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1911, 59).

  5. Power and Riches Pride and Vanity Appetites • For a temptation, classify it and find a scripture you can quote, “It is written…” • For a scripture, come up with a temptation and classify it. • Wildcard: Come up with both under a certain category!

  6. One unifying word in these three temptations…. • “If” as in “If thou be the Son of God” • Remember Christ was still discovering His role and mission, and Satan challenged that. • Not the last time He will be tempted in the same way (Luke 23:35-39) • Hebrews 4:14-15, 5:8-9 • He has gone through it all (the complete temptation, the complete suffering) so that He can help us overcome our own way.

  7. Notebook Ideas • How can you use the example of Jesus to resist temptation when it may come? • What strengthens your “peel”, causing you to float above the waters of sin? • What does Satan try to get you to prove when enticing you to sin?
