  9. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Summary of Chapter Six • Jesus selects his apostles • Jesus teaches us not to judge others • People are identified by their fruit

  10. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 6:1–5 - Lord of the Sabbath

  11. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 6:1–5 - Lord of the Sabbath • In this first Sabbath controversy, confirmed in vv.6–11, Luke 13:10–17 and Luke 14:1–6, Jesus announces that he is lord of the Sabbath.

  12. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 1One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.

  13. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • One Sabbath they pick some ears of corn.

  14. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • One Sabbath they pick some ears of corn. • If you enter your neighbour’s vineyard, you may eat all the grapes you want, but do not put any in your basket. If you enter your neighbour’s grainfield, you may pick kernels with your hands, but you must not put a sickle to his standing grain. • (Deuteronomy 23:24–25).

  15. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke and Mark record the stories in vv.1-11 as occurring on separate occasions, whereas Matthew records it on the same day. • Either way makes no difference to the point being made.

  16. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • In translations where the Sabbath is specified it indicates it is the week after Passover and therefore in springtime. • And it came to pass on the second Sabbath after the first, that He went through the cornfields (21st Century KJV).

  17. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • They rub them to remove the outer chaff.

  18. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 2Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”

  19. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 2Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” • Some of the Pharisees considered plucking grain on the Sabbath as work and therefore forbidden.

  20. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 2Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?” • Some of the Pharisees considered plucking grain on the Sabbath as work and therefore forbidden. • You includes Jesus as he was responsible for his disciples actions.

  21. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 3 Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4 He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions”

  22. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • What David did. • The Sabbath is not mentioned in 1 Samuel 21:1–6 but the point is that David did something that is lawful only for the priests, as confirmed in Leviticus 24:5–9; that is, eating the consecrated bread

  23. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • The bread of the presence is 12 loaves baked every Sabbath and placed before the Lord as an offering. • The previous weeks offering is holy and can only be eaten by the priests.

  24. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath”

  25. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 5 Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath”. • Jesus argument essentially is that the Son of Man, and not the Pharisees, through their regulations, ultimately rules over and interprets the Sabbath.

  26. • The Sabbath was made for man.

  27. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 6:6–11 - A man with a withered hand

  28. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 6:6–11 - A man with a withered hand • In a second Sabbath controversy see vv.1–5, Luke 13:10–17 and Luke 14:1–6, Jesus exercises his power and authority to heal on the Sabbath. We have previously discussed the links between power and authority.

  29. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shrivelled.

  30. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 6 On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shrivelled. • 7 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.

  31. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • The Pharisees and the teachers of the lawor scribes were discussed in the last chapter.

  32. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • They watched Jesus not to gain insight but to accuse Jesus.

  33. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • They watched Jesus not to gain insight but to accuse Jesus. • Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue ruler said to the people, “There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath” (Luke 13:14).

  34. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shrivelled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.

  35. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 8 But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shrivelled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there. • 9 Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

  36. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it? • The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? (Continued).

  37. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?” When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing. • (Luke 13:14-16).

  38. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored.

  39. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. • Stretch out your hand – neither Jesus nor the man did anything constituting work!

  40. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. • Stretch out your hand – neither Jesus nor the man did anything constituting work! • His hand was completely restored. This is proof that Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath (v.5).

  41. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 11 But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

  42. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 11 But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. • They were furious. Even a mighty miracle cannot change their hardened hearts.

  43. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • 11 But they were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. • They were furious. Even a mighty miracle cannot change their hardened hearts. • What they might do to Jesus serves as the conclusion of vv.1–10 and foreshadows his suffering and death.

  44. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 6:12–49 - Jesus teaches the disciples

  45. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 6:12–49 - Jesus teaches the disciples • Jesus appoints 12 apostles, then gives extended teaching to a large group of disciples, including what is often called the ‘Sermon on the Plain’ (vv.20–49), which is similar to the ‘Sermon on the Mount’ in  • Matthew chapters 5–7.

  46. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 6:12–16 - Twelve apostles

  47. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Luke 6:12–16 - Twelve apostles • Jesus chooses 12 apostles. • The word apostle comes from the Greek  • apostolos or messenger, i.e. one who is sent out, and who will see the Risen Lord.

  48. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Saviour through your apostles (2 Peter 3:2).

  49. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote you with the wisdom that God gave him. He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction. • (2 Peter 3:15–16).

  50. The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee • Paul was called to be an apostle when Jesus appeared to him on the Damascus Road. • And last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born (1 Corinthians 15:8).
