  1. WELCOME TO NGSS AND Correlating LA, Math, Science, andEngineering!

  2. Core Content designed to move the study of Science into the “future” and connect students to field of Engineering, which develops science concepts for life enhancement.

  3. NGSS have 3 intertwined dimensions: • Practices • Crosscutting Concepts • Core Ideas

  4. What is the difference between Science & Engineering? • Science is the study of the natural world. • Engineering is the application of math and science to create something of value from our natural resources. • But, they cannot be neatly separated. • Both are needed to develop products and to advance society.

  5. Fundamental Crosscutting Concepts • Length and length-related parameters • Time and time-related parameters • Mass and mass-related parameters • Force and force-related parameters • Temperature and temperature-related parameters • Electric current and related parameters • Energy and power and related parameters

  6. Two ideas we want to share: • Sample of unpacking Standards • Some activities that support cross curricular connections with math/science/engineering

  7. You will receive a an email with a copy of the NGSS in a Word document to help with your unpacking needs. You still may have to manipulate the size, etc. to get to desired size, etc. Sunni, who has been attending the Science Network, will be working with elementary teachers to start this process. Adjust as needed to fit your grade level standards.

  8. Jan, Sondra, and I recently attended the 2 week Science/Math/Engineering seminar at MSU. We are going to share example activities with you to demonstrate connections between LA, math, science, and engineering. We will also be emailing these activities and other links to you as well. If you have questions PLEASE contact one of the four of us. Let me know if you have trouble opening files. Please make sure you completed our email list. Thanks

  9. Integrating Science/Math with Reading/Writing Informational Articles Fiction Picture Books Nonfiction

  10. HANDOUT IDEAS • Picture books – Create math problems that relate to the book such as Esio Trot • Nonfiction books – Create math problems that relate to the book such as Full Body Burden • Nonfiction books – Create argumentative writings based on the science issues raised in the book (corporate rights vs individual rights) • Informational Articles – Create math problems related to the science topic such as the Tardigrades article • Fiction books – Create argumentative/informational writings based on the science issues raised in the book such as The Bar Code Tattoo

  11. Aluminum Foil Boat This activity can be adapted for just about any grade level and can be made as complex as you want as you see by the handout. It connects math, science, and engineering all in one activity. Students are engaged in higher ordering thinking and in analyzing.

  12. Orbits and Earth’s Crust • Orbits activity provides students with Solar system, math, and engineering (model construction) experiences. • Reading About Materials in the Earth’s Crust provides students with LA, science, and Math experiences. Older students can be given the data and construct their on pie charts; the younger students can color code the charts.

  13. Be on the look out for the emails with these activities and more plus the NGSS on WORD. Please contact any of us for help. Unpacking: Sunni Ogg & Resanda Robertson Cross-curricular Activities: Jan Strickland, Sondra Lawton, or Resanda Robertson

  14. Thank You Have a GREAT school year!
