  1. Development of Biomass in Three Gorges Zone Da-chun Gong China Three Gorges University

  2. Contents • 1. Introduction • 2. Our local biomass and development • 3. Perspectives • 4. Current problems

  3. 1. Introduction • biomass resources ,such as forestry products, agricultural by-products, municipal, and industrial solid fibrous wastes • to control the net emission of CO2 • renewable • sustainable • abundantly available • reduce the petroleum dependence.

  4. However, the conversion system of biomass to energy is the matter of question. • How to develop an high-efficiency technology for the transformation of biomass is the key to the question. • At present, there are three kinds of conversion systems of biomass .

  5. Biomass Physical method Chemical method Bioengineering method Solid fuel Gas Products Liquid Products H2、CH4….. Lactic acid、Fuel ethanol、 methanol、biodiesel

  6. Chemical transformation of biomass (cellulose) • high temperature gasification • pyrolysis • Catalysis Rh/CeO2 and Rh/CeO2/SiO2 • Disadvantages: the formation of tar (complex liquid mixture of oxygenates and higher hydrocarbons), and char (the carbonaceous solid) and the tough conditions of the gasification reaction

  7. Chemical transformation of biomass (cellulose) • Catalysis Rh/CeO2 and Rh/CeO2/SiO2 advantages: low temperatures (823K-923K) low impurity content

  8. Biotransformation of biomass • Anaerobic digestion (AD) ---biomethane • Fermentation-lactic acid /ethanol/biodiesel • Advantages: mild condition friendly environment good selectivity large scale-up

  9. 2. Our local biomass and development by biotransformation

  10. 2. Our local biomass I -- agricultural products • rice、corn • sweet potato • rape • orange (navel orange)

  11. Sweet potato • Planting area: 6 million mu(1mu=666.7m2) • Production :1.8 billion kg • Seeding period: April every year • Harvest time : September every year • Soil : dry farming or barren land • Starch contain:28%(wet), 40%(dry) • Price: 0.10-0.20 RMB yuan (fresh )

  12. Rape • Planting area: 1.9million mu (the largest one in our country) • Production: 2 million tons • Rapeseed Containing oil: 35-50% • Rapeseed price :2,430 RMB yuan/ton(2005)

  13. Development 1---fuel ethanol • Pilot scale-up • 50L fermentation fuel ethanol production using sweet potatoes

  14. Process of fuel ethanol • Strain: Saccharomyces cereviciae resistant to high temperature(50℃ ) and high degree of alcohol(15%)---- Angel Yeast Co. Ltd offered. • Technology: SSF and membrane separate • Feedstock: sweet potato (leaf 、stalk ) • Enzymatic system: endoglucanase and exoglucanase and β-glucosidase) and other specific enzymes

  15. SSF technology: Simultaneous sarccharification and fermentation using cellulase system (including endoglucanase and exoglucanase and β-glucosidase) and other specific enzymes.

  16. 醋酸甲酯 生物催化 生物柴油 过滤和干燥 固定化 细胞 原料油脂 予处理 蒸馏 油渣 回收溶剂 Development 2---biodiesel • Biodiesel from rapeseed oil • Technology: biocatalyzed by double-layer alginate -supported yeast

  17. Our local biomass II---agricultural residues • corn cob • wheat straw • cotton rod and rape rod • animal (cattle pig ) dung

  18. Our local biomass III ---industrial waste • Angel Yeast Co., Ltd 20,000 tons baker’ s yeast / 45,000tons waste (a little sugar, much cellulose )

  19. These biomass resources have complex compositions. • We used anaerobic digestion to convert these biomass II and III to biomethane.

  20. Development---biomethane

  21. Biosynthesis pathway of biomethane and hydrogen

  22. Our Goals –one village-one biogas station

  23. Demonstration project of biomethane by anaerobic digestion

  24. 3. Perspectives • Developing industrial production of fuel ethanol from sweet potatoes • Building the demonstration project of biomethane by anaerobic digestion • Pilot scale-up research on the biodiesel from rapeseed oil.

  25. 4.Current problems • (1) Improving membrane separate technology for industrial fuel ethanol from sweet potatoes or cellulose, further lowering the separation cost of ethanol-water • (2) Designing high efficiency reactor foe anaerobic digestion

  26. (3) Establishing the good system (policy) for building the demonstration project of biomethane by anaerobic digestion to carry out “one village one biogas station” • (4) Improving the supporting technology of cell to decrease the cost of production of the biodiesel from rapeseed oil.
