  1. Marie Curie Fellowship ECON2 Mini-conference 9-11 July 2008 University of Malta

  2. ECON2 Mini-conference M.Sc By Research : Kenneth Spiteri Supervisors: Dr. Pericle Zanchetta Dr. Lee Empringham

  3. Presentation Outline • Motivation • Background • Work Done Under ECON2 • Conclusion & Results • Further Work

  4. Motivation • To built on a small scale, a prototype setup using a matrix converter for the control of the rotor side of a DFIG for wind energy application.

  5. Background • Wind power renewable energy; How should it be done?

  6. Background • Fixed Speed Generators. • Adjustable Speed: Direct in line. • Adjustable Speed: Doubly Fed Induction Generator.

  7. Work Done Under ECON2

  8. Achievements • A matrix converter for a DFIG system has been successfully been built and tested. • The MC was controlled to obtain conversion.

  9. Further Work • Interface the built converter with a DFIG system. • Code the simulated control algorithm into DSP. • Connect the DFIG to the grid.

  10. Thank you for your Cooperation Any Questions?
