  2. Growing Up • Marie Skłodowska was born November 7, 1867. • She lived in Warsaw, Poland. • She had 4 brothers and sisters. She was the youngest in her family. • She went to a boarding school and tutored other kids after she graduated • She helped her sister pay for medical school by working as a nanny

  3. Growing Up (Continued) • She moved to Paris to go to college. She studied chemistry and physics. • Not a lot of girls studied these things.

  4. Marie and Pierre Curie • Marie met Pierre Curie when she was in college • He was a professor of Chemistry and Physics • The both liked to study and learn about the same things • They got married in 1895 • They had two daughters named Eve and Irene

  5. Two New Elements • Marie and Pierre Curie discovered two new elements • She worked with her her husband Pierre in the lab • Theycalled them Radium and Polonium • Polonium was named after Marie’s home country, Poland • Their scientific names are Ra and Po

  6. Nobel Prize • Marie Curie won the Nobel prize for Physics in 1903 • The Nobel Prize is one of the highest awards for scientists • She was the first woman to ever win it • She won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911 • She is the only person to win the Nobel Prize in two different scientific fields

  7. Why I picked Marie Curie • I love science • I like that she discovered new elements • She was a scientist and most other girls weren’t
