  2. What are landforms? • The natural shapes or features on the earth’s surface are called landforms. • There are many different types of landforms found on the earth.

  3. mountain A mountain is a place on Earth’s surface that is much higher than the land around it.

  4. hills • Hills are rounded, raised areas of land that are not as high as mountains.

  5. valley A valley is a low area between higher lands such as mountains or hills.

  6. island An island is land that is completely surrounded by water.

  7. lake A lake is water that is completely surrounded by land.

  8. ocean Oceans are the largest bodies of water on earth.

  9. coast A coast is the area where the ocean touches the land.

  10. desert A desert is a dry area that gets very little rainfall.

  11. river A river is a long flowing body of water.

  12. continents • Continents are the seven largest masses of land on the earth. Can you name all seven?
