  3. Angela Merkel • Born on July 17, 1954 in Hamburg, Germany. • Elected as first female Chancellor of Germany in 2005 federal election. • In 2007 she became the second woman to chair the G8. • Forbes currently ranks her as the world's second most powerful person.

  4. Capital • Before WWII the capital was Berlin. • After WWII the capital of West Germany was Bonn. • In 1990 East and West Germany reunited and the capital again became Berlin. • Bonn continues to have some federal ministries.

Facts on Germany • Size - 357,o21 square kilometers • Population – approximately 82,000,000 • Language – German • Currency – Euro • Climate – temperate, mild winters and cool summers • Products – machinery, automobiles, and chemicals • Animals – wild boar, white swan, and ibex (wild goat) • Sports – soccer, ice hockey, and tennis • Foods – sausage, sauerkraut, and chocolate

  7. Germany’s Flag Colors – Black, Yellow, Red • Equal stripes of black, red, and yellow. • Colors represent German unity and freedom, both freedom of the country and also personal freedom.

An Important Fact • Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor of Germany in 1933. • Germany invaded foreign countries which led to the start of World War II. • Germany conquered most of Western Europe. • Hitler's “Final Solution” led to the extermination of approximately 10 to 11 million Jews, Romani, people with disabilities, and prisoners of war. • Germany officially surrendered on May 7, 1945.

Important Citizens • Albert Einstein – Born in 1879 in Ulm and known for the theory of relativity and considered father of modern physics. • Wernher Von Braun – Born 1912 in Wirsitz and considered the father of rocket science. • Ludwig van Beethoven – Born in Bonn, baptized in 1770 and famous as a classical composer. • Martin Luther – Born 1843 in Eisleben. He was a German monk and leader of the Protestant Reformation. • The Brothers Grimm – Jacob born in 1785 and Wilhelm born in 1786 and are famous writers of fairy tales including Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel & Gretel, Rapunzel, and Snow White. • Pope Benedict XVI – Born 1927 in Marktl and is the 265th Pope of the Catholic Church.
