  2. IP network What is iSCSI? iSCSI is an abbreviation of Internet Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) an IP-based storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities by DAS or SAN connections. Unlike traditional SCSI and Fibre Channel, which requires special purpose cabling, iSCSI can be run over long distances using existing network infrastructure. By carrying SCSI commands over IP networks. 2

  3. Direct Attached Storage (iSCSI vs SCSI) iSCSI requires normal Ethernet cable to directly connect server and RAID; unlike SCSI must use specific SCSI HBA and cable. Directly connection length of iSCSI cable reaches to 100 meter which much over maximum 12meter of SCSI cable. Network Cable ~100m SCSI Cable ~12m SCSI iSCSI 3

  4. FC Switch IP Switch Storage Attached Network (iSCSI vs FC) FC SANs are dedicated storage networks, whose deployment requires specialized host bus adapters, specialized FC switches and FC storage arrays. Although all of these components are costly and add a layer of complexity iSCSI can easily be deployed on the commodity networking hardware without expansive equipments of FC HBA, cable and switch. iSCSI SAN FC SAN 4

  5. Difference of iSCSI, NAS Same as traditional SCSI and FC interface, iSCSI require block-level access to the hard drives such as email servers, databases, and high usage file servers. Network Attached Storage (NAS) uses file-based protocols such as NFS or SMB/CIFS for remote files sharing. 13. Redundant System Overview • Maxtronic redundant system design extends the no-single-point-failure to the controller entity. • Two controllers in one system. They are named by controller A (left/top), and controller B (right/bottom). • A full-duplex RCC (redundant communication channel) is established for synchronization purpose. • - Configuration • - Object state • - Write cache • The write-cache data is preserved only when one of the controller is failed. Cache Coherence Channels Controller A Controller B 13

  14. Controller Overview • High Speed BP Melt • Hot swappable redundant controller • Support up to 24 drives in one enclosure • On Board SAS Expander • Flexible to support from 12-bay, 16-bay, and 24-bay • Cache coherence • X4 full-duplex SAS for cache coherence Intel XScale IOP341 • PCI Express X 8 • Up to 2000 MB/s • transfer rate • DDR2-533 Cache Memory • ECC and BBM protected • Up to 4GB memory size • Host Interface Daughter board • To support SAS, iSCSI, PCI-e, and FC • Expansion Port • Cascade external SAS JBOD • Support SAS expansion, up to 128 SAS devices • Dual 4Gbps Fibre Channel • Up to 800 MB/s transfer rate • To support quad 4G FC ports • Phone Jack • Communication with host COM port • On-board Ethernet Port • Embedded web server with GUI • Remote centralized management 14

  21. Snapshot 1:00 2:00 3:00 Embedded Snapshot function is host-independent. User is allowed to create 512 shots and instant restore. Timeline Virus Data Growing RollBack / Data Restore to 1:00 Microsoft Shadow Copy (VSS) compatible, allows taking manual or automatic snapshot of data. 21

  22. Bad Block Health OK Sick Cloning Sick Advance Array Functions - Disk Cloning Disk Cloning, a method to automatically copy data to spare disk and replace the sick disk. It could be configured to trigger by the following conditions: - Over bad block threshold of disk. - Detect SMART warning from disk. Bad block alert Trigger Disk SMART 22

  23. Fail Working Advance Array Functions - Array Roaming Array Roaming, array member disks has recorded specific identification when original RAID system or controller faulty, the function provides a easily way to recognized data back by just move member disks to the same model and working RAID system. 23

  24. Array Recovery Advance Array Functions - Array Recovery Array Recovery, a embedded utility to rescue array set back from a fatal error of when parity array (Raid3/5/6) unexpected lose too many disks and makes array fail. 1st Disk Fail RAID 5 Fail~ 2nd disk Fail RAID 5 OK 24

  25. Stop Repaired Advance Array Functions - Array Scrubbing Array Scrubbing, this feature supports parity check and recovery for disk groups, logical disks, and hard disks. Bad sectors will be reported when detected. 25
