  2. Apostolicity • Definition: • The quality of being apostolic, notably of preserving authenticity within the mission and tradition of the Christian church as founded by Jesus ... Having uninterrupted lines of Bishop succession to the apostles.

Malankara Church’s Perfect Apostolicity • Malankara was in communion with the Pope, the head of the Church and the successor of Peter, the apostle. • The disciples formed local Churches that had many liturgies • In Persia and India: The Syrian Liturgy • Roman Empire West: Latin Liturgy • Roman Empire East: Greek Liturgy

  4. The Effects of the Synod of Diamper • Portugese influence to make Malankara as part of the Latin Church caused problems with the children of Malankara • This led to the Slanting Cross Oath, which split the church

  5. Archdeacon Geevarghese Passes… • Bishop Thomas takes over and becomes Archdeacon • The people of the ancient Malankara church stood united with Archdeacon Thomas • To preserve ancient traditions • The tension grew even worse between the Malankara Church and the Portugese missionaries.

The Portugese Rule • Malankara Christians were historically part of the Church of the East (Chaldean Catholic Church). • The Church of the East began to crumble, and the Portugese started to spread their influence. • The PortugesePadroado started to take control of the community both ecclesiastically and secularly.

Portugese Rule Over Malankara • The Portugese proclaimed that the king of Portugal had authority over the Malankara Church • Podraodo Diocese – Goa, Kochi, Mylapore and Kodungaloor (Part of Latin Diocese) • Bishop Francis Roz centralized all authority on himself. • He abolished the authority of the Archdeacon

The Slanting Cross Oath • What is it? • The vow taken on January 3rd, 1653 by MalankaraChristians to not submit to Portuguese dominance in ecclesiastical and secular life • What provoked it? • A Syrian Bishop from Persia was supposed to arrive in Kochi, but the Portugese would not let him land, and spread false rumors of his death.

Jacobites and Syro Malabar are Formed • Mar Jacob, a Jacobite Bishop came to Kerala from Jerusalem in 1665. • Introduced Antiochene liturgy • Jacobites • Bishop Chandy • Ordained by Sebastiani • Followed the East Syrian liturgy • East Syrian Catholics (Syro-Malabar) • The majority of people from the Slanting Cross Oath followed Bishop Chandy
