Why meet? • To review our past, understand our present, and envision our future together. • To begin a series of regular Superintendent meetings to facilitate more communication. • This first meeting aims at: • Sharing important information that every parent should know. • Remembering our roots, defining our current status, and envisioning the future together. • Sharing our collective heart for the school, addressing parent concerns, comments and ideas in a Q&A.

  3. origins • Valley Christian Church began on July 7, 1963, in the home of Curtis Smith. • The Church opened the Elementary School in 1970 with 70 students in K-6. • Grades 7 and 8 were added in 1978 with a total of 350 students. • For almost 20 years, the school rented a local elementary campus. • The first buildings, including the Sanctuary and the Junior High, were dedicated on the property known as “The Hill” in November of 1982. • The Preschool was dedicated in 1984. • The Senior High building in 1990. • The Elementary School in 1995.

Today • 1150 Students in 3 Schools • Over 30 Sports Teams • Unparalleled Parent Volunteerism • Servant Leadership Program • Chapel Leadership • Conservative Leadership • The Elementary School won the Blue Ribbon School Award in 2004 • Our Preschool has become a model for others to follow • ACSI and WASC Accredited

Today • Average SAT scores of 1760 :: State Average is 1512 (+16%) • Average ACT scores of 25.1 :: State Average is 21.1 (+19%) • 97% college placement • 2007 Valedictorian Attending Vanderbilt • Salutatorian attending Harvey Mudd College • Recent Graduate is attending the US Naval Academy • Current Senior just received the Marshall Scholarship!

  6. governance • The Schools are the largest outreach ministry of Valley Christian Center. • Rev. Roger Valci was installed as our new Senior Pastor on November 9, 2008. • VCC is an Assemblies of God Church • The world’s largest Pentecostal organization at over 400,000,000 members • Pentecostal is a term describing a belief in the authority of Scripture and in the work of the Holy Spirit. • VCS accepts students of all denominations and faiths.

  10. Future Advisory board • We may develop an Advisory Board to the Superintendent that will meet regularly. • Membership: any Valley Christian School parent may qualify. We may also consider alumni, parents of alumni, pastors, or other members of our community. VCC membership not required. • Purpose: • Provide a stronger voice for parents and other constituents • Facilitate 2 way communication • Jointly plan for the future • Fulfill ACSI recommendation for parental involvement • The Superintendent will communicate concerns and share minutes with School and Deacon Boards

  13. finances • Are Buildings owned by the Church? • Yes. Church owns all buildings and pays the mortgage. • All buildings were funded by Church-led capital campaigns, with the exception of the ES, for which a 7M loan was secured by the Church. • The Schools pay rent to the Church at or below market value. • The schools utilize the current (and new) Sanctuary for school purposes. • The VCC Church Sanctuary Building Project will involve NO school funds. • 100% of all funds raised by PTF, Boosters, and Servant Leadership go directly into School projects.

ASSET CONCLUSION • The Church has paid $7M of $15M of assets of which the Church uses 10%, and the Schools utilize 90% ( actually 100%). • The Church covers the School budget when we have a budgetary shortfall. • The Church has never gone to the School for a capital campaign. • The Church loves the School and has sacrificed for it.

Future strategy • Build a STRATEGIC PLAN for the Schools • Review our Mission and Vision • Conduct SWOT Analysis • Create Focus groups from all constituencies • Build consensus on common goals • Identify and prioritize key strategic objectives • Draft workable 3, 5, and 10 year plans • Coordinate implementation teams to execute the plans • Assess progress and revise approach as necessary

  19. Mission statement To provide a comprehensive college preparatory education from an evangelical Christian Worldview that will equip students with the skills to flourish spiritually, excel academically, thrive relationally, and succeed in life’s work in order to further God’s Kingdom on Earth.

  20. Vision: Where we want to be To be of the highest academic quality that we can possibly achieve. We serve in a community that demands academic excellence. In light of this, we will offer high level college preparatory courses that will allow our students to matriculate into the top universities in our country. We will be progressive, forward thinking, and excellent in all that we do.

  25. conclusion • We have a rich and blessed history built by champions of the Christian Faith…pastors, teachers, parents and students. • VCS have provided, and will continue to provide, a high quality Christian education for all of our students. • We will build a strategy based upon our convictions, and with the collective wisdom of our entire community. • The Church and the Schools are part of one family. • We embrace this new season at VCC and VCS – Together… “We can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us.” Philippians 4:13
