  • Gazi University is one of the oldest and leading universities in Turkey. Gazi University aims to keep up with contemporary scientific and technological developments and contribute to the development of national culture. The university carries out its educational, cultural and social activities within a systematic and comprehensive framework.

  • Gazi University is one of the biggest universities in Turkey in terms of its effectiveness, physical capacity and the number of personnel and students.

  • Today, the university continues its activities with its 25 faculties, 22 colleges and 5 institutes. Apart from these the university has 18 research centres.

  • About 60.000 students are being educated in these institutions.

  • The number of students per instructor is 16 and this is close to the world average

  • The university has faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering and Architecture, Economics and Administrative, Science and Arts, Law, Fine Arts, Çorum Economics and Administrative Sciences, Çorum Engineering, Çorum Veterinary, Kastamonu Forestry, Kirsehir Agriculture, Kirsehir Science and Arts and Inebolu Aquaculture.

  • Being the leader of the country with its education faculties, Gazi University has faculties of Industrial Arts, Gazi Education, Vocational Education, Technical Education, Commerce and Tourism, Kastamonu Education, Kirsehir Education.

  • Gazi University is centrally situated in Ankara and geographically it is at a suitable place in terms of transportation.

  • Gazi University is one of the few universities whose history dates back to 1920s.

  • Right after the declaration of the Turkish Republic, the founder of the Turkish Republic Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his friends decided to establish an educational institute. This resulted in the establishment of the 'Teacher Training Institute' in 1926.

  • In 1929 the institute was given the name 'Gazi Teacher Training Institute' and continued to educate students under this name for many years. In the Academic year 1949-1950 the institution was given the name 'Gazi Institute of Education'.

  • In 1982, the institution got the name Gazi University together with Ankara Academy of Economy and Commerce, Ankara College of Technical Teachers, Ankara Girls' College of Technical Teachers and Ankara Government Academy of Engineering and Architecture. Actually this university is the continuation of the tradition starting with Republic with a new name.

  • As known Turkey has started to participate the European Ecucational programs fully as of May 2004, by the Memorandum signed with the European Commission.

  • For the call year 2004, Turkey was given the authority on for the promotion of Leonardo Mobility projects. For this call year Gazi University has proposed a total of 36 Mobility projects at different fields.

  • All of the projects have been approved after the evaluations and the University got a budget of approximately 900.000 € for conducting these projects.

  • In the call year 2004 the total number of accepted projects was 215. And Gazi University led the first among all Turkish Universities and associations in respect of the accepted institutional projects.

  • In the call year 2005 of the Mobility projects Gazi University still remained its first position among the Turkish Universities and organisations with its 11 accepted projects amounted to 400.000 €.

  • Turkey has taken the opportunity to propose Leonardo B ve C type projects firstly for the call year 2005.

  • In September 2004, Gazi University has given a total of 8 pilot project proposals.

  • Two of these projects have been invited to submit full proposals

  • And finally one of them (this project) have been approved by the European Commission.

  • In the call year 2005, the number of accepted pilot projects from Turkey is only 5.

  • This is probably due to the inexperience in the programme.

  • Of the 5 accepted projects from Turkey, the highest amount of Leonardo contribution was awarded to PP 178 009 with a budget of 374.616 €.

  • In the full proposal we have anticipated the Leonardo contribution as 384.000 €.

  • The Commission experts have found all details of the project successfull. There was no critise about even the small detail of the worpackages, aims, partnership, valorisation etc.

  • The only small changes made to the project were done by the budget experts considering the European Commission’s determined staff rates in the partnership countries.

  • There were no other changes.

  • Operational and subcontracting costs were accepted as it is proposed

  • Other than Leonardo, Gazi University also intensifies on Erasmus programs.

  • The first Erasmus student and teaching staff mobility programs started in the academic year 2004-2005 (after the signature of the memorandum).

  • In that academic year a total of 36 students have been sent to EU countries with the student mobility program.

  • As well as that, 24 academic staff went to EU countries within the teaching staff mobility programs. 11 academicians form Eu countries came to our university within the same program.

Background

  • The nucleus of the faculty is Industrial Arts Teacher Training College established by the Ministry of Education in 1974. The Industrial Arts Teachers training college was composed of three departments: Department of Home Economy, Department of Work and Technical Training and Department of Business Education. The College kept that structure up to 1982.

  • The College became part of the Faculty of Vocational Education in 1982 as the Department of Technology Education. In 1988, Computer Education program was added to the available programs. Finally, the faculty has been restructured with its new departments in 1992 and named as the Faculty of Industrial Arts Education. The Faculty has the qualification of being the only institution providing Technology Teacher in the country.

  • Department of Business Education

  • Department of Educational Sciences

  • Among these departments, Dept. of Industrial Technology Education, Dept. of Computer Education, Dept. of Family and Consumer Science Education,, and Dept. of Business Education have their own undergraduate programs towards training teachers in the related fields.

  • The Department of Educational Sciences does not have any special undergraduate program and responsible for the lectures of teacher training (pedagogy formation) courses.

Mission

  • Industrial Arts Education (The new name is Technology Education) is the type of education which helps students at primary level find out their interests and attitudes, prepares them for a profession through introduction of profession and steers which will lead to a choice of profession rationally.

  • The basic aim of The Faculty of Industrial Arts of Education is to educate teachers for the Technology Education and ICT course conducted as compulsory at the second level of primary school education and the optional courses on computer, agriculture, local handcrafts and technology. Previously, the technology education courses at the secondary schools was named as Work Education which involved Work and Techniques, Commerce, Home Economy and Agriculture.

  • There are 14 workshops for Woodworks, Metalworks, Electricity, Electronics, Ceramics, Design, Power and Energy, Graphics, Serigraphy, Press, Clothing, Textile Handcrafts, Nutrition and 5 laboratories are active for teaching and learning activities.

  • There are 8 professors, 4 associate professors, 17 assistant professors, 17 lecturers, 19 research assistants at the Faculty.

Employment Opportunities

  • Our faculty has educated approximately 3.540 technology education teachers up to now for the Ministry of National Education according to the criteria set for our aim.

  • Choice of profession has become more important with starting of the eight-year continuous obligatory Primary Education in 1997. This caused a rapid increase in the demand for our graduates.

  • The number of technology education teacher demand, announced for the year 2001 by the Ministry of National Education is 25791.

  • Almost all graduates of our faculty, can be assigned upon request and their score in the “State Staff Selection Exam” and mostly they do not experience any employment problems.

  • This can be observed in the increasing grades of the students preferring our faculty. Our graduates can be also employed by some state institutions and private companies.

Department of Technology Education

  • The Industrial Technology Education program is designed to prepare students for a teaching career mainly in secondary schools. The transformation to technology education continues to provide all students with basic knowledge and skills needed for modern technology.

  • Students are prepared to teach in the following areas: communication, construction, manufacturing, energy and transportation. Technology Education is a hands-on program using an investigative, design-and-construct, problem solving approach to teaching. Students study the resources, systems, and products of technology. The curriculum is designed to allow students to teach in a laboratory setting using modern technological tools.

  • There is a very high demand for Technology Education teachers nationwide. Thus, Gazi University Dept. of Industrial Technology Education provides graduates for this demand across the country. Opportunities abound for students considering a Technology Education teaching career.

  • Beyond this, the industrial technology education curriculum prepares teachers of technology and industrial subjects for the elementary, middle, and senior high school, and teachers of industrial-vocational subjects for the senior high and colleges. It offers a broad-based description of modern industry and technology, and the opportunity to acquire specialized competencies in a number of technical, industrial and/or vocational areas.

  • The Industrial Technology Education Program is the first and unique B.S. program to be established at Gazi University for more than 20 years ago.

  • Holding curriculum at B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. levels, the Department of Industrial Technology Education provides common concepts of Industrial Technology Education and relevant practices as well as required subjects for the teaching career. Within this framework, students are trained in multi-discipline conformity.

  • Practices are supported by the workshop facilities of power and energy, woodworks, metal works, electrics, electronics, graphics, pres, ceramics and serigraphy workshops as well as computer labs. Apart from these, students can improve their skills and experience towards a specific field by means of industrial design and electives.

  • Academic staff includes 1 professor, 1 associate professor, 3 assistant professors, 7 lecturers and 3 research assistants.

  • The Industrial Material Technology involves the basic information about industrial manufacturing. Since one of the significant functions of technology education includes industrial manufacturing, recognizing and processing of industrial materials are of importance. The Industrial Material Technology Education Division examines the standards, processing methods and behavioral characteristics of industrial materials during the development and processing periods. Plastic materials, metals, wood materials, composite materials, glass and ceramic materials are included in the subject of this division. As well as that, material selection, process, determination of appropriate construction and quality control could be listed in the subject area of this division.

  • The Energy and Transport Technology Education Division addresses the interdisciplinary education of all forms of energy available throughout the world and transportation technology. Development of energy resources, processing energy, converting, transmitting and conserving forms of energy, processing, transmitting and controlling information, developing and conserving biological resources are the main concepts of this division. In addition Energy and transport technology education involves creative problem-solving processes such as identifying energy technology related problems to be resolved and planning and designing of energy systems. Within this program renewable energy resources such as solar energy, wind energy, biomass energy, geothermal energy and hydraulic energy are given a special emphasis.

  • Most graduates of this program are employed as teacher at the secondary and the post-secondary level schools. As there is a great demand for technology teacher within the Ministry of Education, almost all graduates could be assigned as Technology Teacher, Industrial Technology Teacher and Work and Technique Education Teacher in secondary schools, post-secondary schools and vocational schools after the completion of the program. The flexibility of the program opens the doors of many other occupational opportunities such as professional positions in business and industry. Generally, graduates utilize their educational and technical expertise for the interdisciplinary professions in industry.
