  1. Radio Frequency Identification(RFID) Group 12 Caleb, Greg, Keith

  2. The Plan • Dicuss the basics of RFID • Give some examples of how RFID pertains to business • Describe the controversies that surround RFID • Explain some of the potential uses for RFID • Justify our assigned reading sources

  3. What is RFID? • RFID consists of a RFID tag and reader • Three types of tags • Passive • Active • Semi-passive • Each tag contains information • Products • Passports • Credit Cards

  4. Passive Tags • Powered by reader • Can be read at short distance only (a few feet at most) • Long life • Less expensive • Small in size

  5. Active Tags • Battery powered • Can be read from greater distances (up to 1500 ft) • Larger in size than other tags • Hold more information • Greater reliability

  6. Semi-passive Tags • Response powered by reader • Contains battery for other functions • Stores large amounts of data • Battery may increase signal strength • Less expensive than active tags

  7. RFID in Business

  8. RFID Ethical Issues

  9. RFID ~ Ethical Issues • Privacy • Tracking • NO GPS in tags • Passive tags • Active Tags • Close reader proximity • Within Feet Smallest GPS receiver Smallest RFID tags

  10. RFID ~ Ethical Issues • Security • Information retrieval • Reader must be present • Usually Encrypted • Data Stored • Credit Cards • Passport • Medical Information • University housing lock system

  11. RFID ~ Ethical Issues • Human Implantation • Can’t track people (or anything) • GPS Constraints • Minimal reader distance • Voluntary/Involuntary • Convicted Felons (Fingerprinting) • Immigrant workers • Who is in our country and where? • RFID Computer Login • Shopping Made Easy

  12. RFID ~ Ethical Issues • Medical Benefits? • Medical records accessible • No physical benefits • Medical Downfalls • Cancer Causing?

  13. RFID The Future

  14. RFID in The Future • Retail and warehousing • Every day usage • Military benefits

  15. Retail and Warehousing • Inventory updates • Logistics tracking • Customer checkout efficiency increase • Theft will be reduced

  16. RFID in Your Life • Keep track of everyday items • Automated grocery lists • Expiration date reminder for food • Automatic car starter

  17. Military Benefits • Tagged explosives • Solder identification and tracking • Hidden audio recorders • Inventory control

  18. Finding Information • RFID in Business

  19. Finding Information • Ethical Issues

  20. Finding Information • Future Potential
