  3. More Stats • 30,896 people were killed by firearms in 2006 compare w/ page 86 stats • 12791 were homicides • 16883 were suicides • 642 were accidental shootings • 360 resulted from legal intervention • 220 were undetermined causes

  4. Gun Control Act of 1968 Created after assassinations in the 1960s • Prevents the following people from obtaining firearms • Federal Felons, State felons that received a jail term of 2+ years, Fugitives, Illegal drug users • Mentally defective people or those who were institutionalized • Illegal aliens, Former citizens who have renounced his or her citizenship • Dishonorably discharged armed forces members • Anyone under a restraining order from an intimate partner or child or who has been convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor

  5. Gun Control Act of 1968 Firearms dealers must be federally licensed Min. age to buy long rifles and shotguns: 18years Min. age to buy handgun: 21 years Guns must have a serial number- removing is a felony

  6. Brady Act of 1993 Background checks must be completed before purchasing a firearm National Instant Criminal Background Check System(NICS) is maintained by the FBI Private sellers are not required to perform background checks
