Political Life in Athens’ Golden Age • Pericles’ Athens was a DIRECT DEMOCRACY • Large number of citizens take an active part in voting for issues • THIS WAS NOT A REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY • Athenian Assembly during Pericles’ “Golden Age” • 6,000 citizens must be present to decide important decisions • All men should be able to hold public office • Pericles paid a STIPEND so even poor people could hold political office
