  1. Theme, Tone, & Mood Monthly Book Review

  2. Theme • The message or meaning of the story. • This can be directly stated or inferred. • In a fable this is the moral or lesson of the story. • In fiction this is a view on life and how people behave.

  3. Theme • Theme is different than the subject the author writes about. • Theme expresses some opinion on that topic. • Example: Subject: War Theme: War is useless.

  4. Theme • Theme can be expressed through how the author makes us feel. When they share the feelings of the character they share what the character is thinking as well.

  5. Theme • Themes are presented in thoughts and conversations. Look for thoughts that are repeated throughout the story. • Think about what does the main character(s) learn throughout the story.

  6. Theme • Actions and events can suggest theme. Think about what actions say.

  7. Tone • The author’s attitude toward the subject. • Some possible attitudes are pessimism, optimism, seriousness, bitterness, humor, joy. • An author’s tone is shown through word choice and details.

  8. Mood • The mood is the feeling in the story. • The choice of setting, objects, details, images, and words contribute to creating the mood.
