  2. What is the most common type of vascular ring anomaly? • Persistent right aortic arch with persistent left ligamentum arteriosuim

  3. What other anomaly is also present about half of the time? • Persistent left anterior vena cava

  4. What clinical problem does this type of vascular ring anomaly cause? • Strangulated esophagus at the base of the heart

  5. Describe a typical patient with the most common type of vascular ring anomaly: signalment, history, clinical findings. • Signalment: GSD or siamese/persian; postweaning • History: postprandial regurgitation in post weaning puppies and kittens • Clinical findings: emaciation, resp signs secondary to aspiration pneumonia (no cardiac murmur)

Describe a typical patient with the most common type of vascular ring anomaly: laboratory findings, and radiographic findings. • Lab findings: hypoalbuminemia, elevated WBC w aspiration pneumonia • Rad findings: ventral tracheal displacement, mediastinal widening, dilated cranial thoracic esophagus

  7. What is the treatment and prognosis for this patient? • Tx • Surgical ligation and division of vascular ring • Prognosis • Megaesophagus rarely completely reversed (more likely with early surgery)
